When I don’t answer her, she asks a question. “What exactly does your MC do?”
“We break horses,” I tell her. Which is the truth. We do break horses at the Diamond Kings Ranch, but that’s more of a cover than anything.
She responds slowly, “You break horses.”
I nod with my eyes on the road in front of us. I hate lying to her. Never have I ever betrayed my brothers’ trust before, but I can’t lie to Ava. “We do other things too. But around here, that’s what we’re known for.”
She seems to think on that and doesn’t ask anything else until we’re driving past the ranch and the clubhouse. “Tank, are drugs involved?”
I keep my eyes on the road in front of us. “No, honey. No drugs.”
“What about women? I know you said your MC doesn’t hurt women, but I know some MCs are into trafficking.”
I pull onto the dirt road that leads to my house. “No, we don’t hurt women. That’s something we’re pretty adamant on.”
I park in the garage and shut the engine down. Before I get out, I turn to Ava. “Anything else?”
The worry seems to have gone off her face. “No... that’s it.” She opens the door and jumps out with me sitting in the same spot staring after her. She’s about to shut the door when she looks at me. “Oh, there is one more thing.”
I tighten my hand on the steering wheel, waiting for her question, hoping it’s something I can answer for her.
“I know it’s crazy... I know we just met... but you’re not like any man I’ve ever met before, Tank. I’m pretty sure you’re the one.”
My eyebrows arch, and instead of ready to run like any other time a woman has talked about commitment or a future, I’m ready for it. “The one?”
She nods. “Yep, the one that’s going to take my virginity.”
She slams the door before I can respond, but all of a sudden, my jeans just got a hell of a lot tighter.
Chapter 8
Ava
I know my face is red. As a matter of fact, my whole body feels hot. I grab some bags from the back of the truck, not waiting for Tank to get out. I almost jog to the front door and am surprised when it opens easily. But I guess being who he is, Tank doesn’t have to worry about locking doors around here. It seems no one is going to be messing with him or any of the Diamond Kings, for that matter.
I go straight to the room I slept in last night and lay the bags on the bed.
I start to pace back and forth, knowing I need to go out there but embarrassed to face Tank. I can’t believe I said that to him. Geez, it’s one thing to think it but a completely different thing to actually say it.
When I hear him come through the front door, I bolt from the room thinking I’ll go right past him and grab some more things out of the truck. He’s coming down the hallway, both arms loaded down with bags. “That’s it.”
I nod and stand back so he can drop the bags into my room. He unloads his arms and stands next to the bed, watching me as I come into the room. “Ava...”
Before he even gets my whole name out, I know what he’s going to say. He’s looking at me with pity, and that’s the last thing I want from him.
I hold my hand up. “Forget it... I didn’t mean it. I’m getting caught up in all this. I mean, of course, I’m going to fall for the one guy that’s nice to me. I take it back... you don’t have to figure out how to turn me down. I don’t want this to be weird.... do you know where I can get a job? I’d like to start as soon as possible. How else am I going to be able to pay you back?”
I would keep rambling if he didn’t walk up to me and put his hands on my shoulders. As soon as he touches me, I take a deep breath and stare at the leather cut he’s wearing, avoiding his eyes.
“Look at me, Ava.”
I lift my eyes and look at him. He smiles at me. “I wasn’t trying to figure out how to turn you down.”
I shake my head to stop this before it gets even more embarrassing, but his hands on my shoulders tighten, pulling me against his body. His hard manhood is pressed against my belly, and I know I look as if my eyes are going to bulge out of my head. His voice is gruff and thick. “I was trying to figure out how I’m going to keep my hands off you. I want you, Ava. I’ve wanted you from the second I saw you standing at the train station. But that doesn’t mean that I should have you. You were sent to me to protect... not to take advantage of.”
