“Luna,” I said, trying my best to find the right words. It would hurt her to realize he hadn’t even given her the bare minimum, and I never wanted to hurt her. She’d been with Dennis since college. He was her first real boyfriend, so he’d set the standard for her sexually, regardless of what she read or saw in movies. She trusted him to take care of her and he was a fucking selfish bastard who clearly didn’t.
“Just tell me,” she said, reading my hesitance.
“No,” I said. “That’s not asking too much.”
She nodded, digesting the information. “So, if we were dating and I showed that to you, how would you react?”
I shifted in my chair, fire licking up my spine. “You really want to know?”
“More than anything,” she said.
She wanted me to play the role, to do my part in giving her peace of mind on the fact that her ex was an asshole. Well, okay then.
I stood up and rounded the table until I was behind her, one hand on either side of the table as I bent slightly so I could look over her shoulder.
“Show me again,” I said, nodding toward her phone.
She quickly opened her phone, the book popping up on the screen. I reached over her, scrolling through the pages again, each time leaning over her just a little bit more until I consumed her space from behind. I could feel the heat from her body, could see the way chill bumps rose on her neck as I dragged my chin over the sensitive area there.
I turned my face, poising my lips at the shell of her ear. “Let’s try page eighty-one when we get home, baby,” I whispered. Luna gasped a little, the reaction sending another surge of need straight to my dick. “And after that, if you still want more, I’ll show you how creative I can be.”
Luna turned to look up at me, her full pink lips popped open in surprise. Something churned in her eyes, and I held her gaze, allowing myself to live in the role a little longer. Wasn’t I asking her to do the same thing with this business trip? Sure, I never thought we’d be discussing the limitations of sexual requests—which wouldn’t exist between us if we were together. Fuck, the woman could ask me to drop to my knees right now and I would.
She blinked a few times, her eyes darting from me to my lips and back again. “That’s what you’d say?”
I smirked as I nodded, then leaned in again, whispering in her ear. “I wouldn’t hesitate to get you off right here, slipping my hand between your legs underneath this tablecloth and seeing how long you could keep a straight face so no one would notice.”
Another little gasp, another dent in the armor I kept around my heart when it came to her.
She shook her head like that might help her focus, and then cleared her throat. “Well,” she said, and I took that as my cue to sit back down. “You’re very good at pretending.”
I laughed at that, a bit sadly too. If she only knew how much I wasn’t pretending. But she couldn’t know. Because she was my best friend, never once showing a hint of interest in me that way, and besides, I’d rather have her in my life in some way than no way at all. And telling her how that offer wasn’t me pretending at all would likely send her running. Because who wants to be friends with a guy who also wants to make you come on his tongue?
“And that’s good to know,” she said. “That he’s the jerk. Not me.” She shook her head. “I feel like I spent the last five years in a fog. I feel like an idiot.”
“Don’t do that,” I said. “You’re amazing, Luna. He’s the asshole.”
“Right,” she said, determination stealing over her face. “Tell me about this retreat.”
“We can keep talking about—”
“I don’t want to waste another ounce of my energy on him,” she cut me off. “Please. I’d much rather focus on this fun trip I’m about to take.” She smiled, and it just about took my breath away.
This girl. She was a powerhouse, beautiful and strong and once she set her mind to something there was no stopping her.
“Okay,” I said. “It’s not going to be like anything we’ve done before,” I admitted. “You’ve been my date to more galas and functions than we can even count, but this time we’ll have to actually act like a couple.”
“And why is this one different than the others?”
“Close-to-Custom is a family-owned and operated company,” I said.
“The app that lets you take a live picture of yourself and it gives you the most accurate sizes for fashion venues across the globe?” she asked.
“That’s the one. They’re looking to expand now that they’re the number one fashion app across the country. That’s why they’re allowing investors to bid for their business, but the only time they could have open meetings was during their company retreat.”
