“What? No. Of course not,” she stammers as if I ask does she eat babies. The answer satisfies me, and I give her a crooked smile. Her mouth parts, and a little gasp escapes. Yes. The attraction is mutual.
“Good.” I start rolling up my sleeves, which gets her attention. Damn, she needs to stop looking at me like that.
“Why?” She lightly licks her lips that have gone dry. “Is there a policy against dating, especially because we’re only interns?”
No, because I’d kill him if he touched you. “It’s just messy when it comes to reporting should you all fight at work. You know?”
“Oh, okay. Well, we’re not together, so that’s all clear.” She takes a calming breath and continues, “Really, I’m sorry about my attitude, sir. It wasn’t right. I know I was frustrated, but I should be a little more considerate of the opportunity I’ve been given.”
Damn, she needs to be wrapped up and protected, not worried about ruining her internship. I hate that I can’t take her in my arms and make it all better. “That’s good to hear, but remember, you’re young, and your emotions get the better of you more often. Just breathe, and if you’re having a problem, let me know. Now, tell me what is it that you’re hoping to get out of interning here?”
“I’m hoping that I gain some experience.” I’ve got the perfect way for her to get experience…in my bed.
“Well, I can definitely get you there. You can go home for the day.” Soon you’ll be going to my home if I have any say about it.
“So, I am in trouble?” she questions.
I smile at her, trying to ease her concern. “No, I’m giving you time to relax. Everyone needs it. You’ll be here tomorrow all day, correct?”
“Yes.”
“Then get some good sleep. It’s going to be a long Friday.” I know it’s going to be brutal for me to be around her and yet, somehow I know I’m going to do my best to run into her.
“Thank you again, Mr. Harding.”
“Have a good day, Demi.” She leaves my office, and my dick is throbbing in my pants so bad that I whip it out and stroke it until I’m coming into a tissue. I’ve never done that at work, but I have a feeling coming at work is going to be my new normal. Whether with my hand or by her is yet to be determined.
I’m here to do work, but none of that’s happening because I’m reading over the reports and the article about her parents' accident. She lost them not too long ago. Shit. My parents are happily retired in Florida waiting to come back to Chicago when I have kids. I might have to call them and tell them to pack their bags because I’m filling Demi with as many kids as I can.
Chapter Three
Demi
I leave his office and my hearts dancing in my chest. It’s been running wild since I spotted him in the lobby, but it’s clear that he’s not feeling the same. He’s being overly sweet to me, but then again, it’s all been business. I have to get a hold of myself just to stop my hands from shaking, so I can gather my things to leave.
What is wrong with me? He’s the boss, and I’m just an intern. He can have any woman he wants and yet, I hope that he wants me just as bad as I crave him.
I hear the click of her heels before I hear Ms. Riley bark out a question for me, “Where do you think you’re going?” Her condescending voice grates my nerves. It’s not that there’s actually anything wrong with her pitch or sound; it’s the fact that everything out of her mouth is an insult or a task meant to pick at me.
I take a deep breath before responding, “Home. Mr. Harding told me to go home.”
“Ah, maybe he doesn’t want you to mess up anything else.” I don’t respond because I know that’s not at all what happened. He’s giving me time off to relax so that I come back refreshed and ready to learn.
“Well, see you tomorrow.” I smile because knowing I don’t have to see her for the rest of the day makes me happy.
“We’ll see about that.” I don’t know what that’s supposed to mean, but it doesn’t matter because she’s not the boss. My orders came straight from the boss’s sexy lips. Maybe she’s going to quit. It’s probably not going to happen, but a girl can hope.
I hit the elevator button, and as the doors open, I feel a sense of loss. Wow, that’s a first. I don’t want to leave. I know the only thing that changed was meeting Stone Harding. He’s a great reason to come to this place. At this point, the only reason.
