I went with a pair of silver stilettos. From the tight hold Knight has on my waist, I did good with my choice in outfit. I didn’t think we were going to make it out of my driveway when he pulled up to pick me up.
The lust in his eyes and the way he kissed me told me he wanted to head inside my place and stay there for the night. If I hadn’t promised Sunny I’d be here, I would have dragged his sexy ass inside and allowed him to nail me to the wall.
Instead, we’re walking into this lounge to meet up with our friends. I cover his hand on my waist and give it a squeeze. He dips his head to kiss the top of mine and flexes his fingers against my hip reassuringly.
“It’ll be fine. Relax. We’ll have dinner and a few drinks, then we’ll be back at your place in no time,” he whispers into my ear.
I take a cleansing breathe and find my center. I can do this. Sunny has never judged me.
“Oh, wow, you guys look great.”
I turn to find Sunny looking us over. She’s glowing herself. The nude dress and heels she has on are head turning. Jamel looks good beside her in a beige turtleneck that sets off his brown skin and a pair of black slacks.
“Hey, you guys look amazing yourselves,” I say back.
Jamel gives us a wide smile as he tugs Knight into a one-armed hug. I laugh to myself as they both move back to our sides to place a protective arm around us. Sunny gives me a knowing smile as she looks at Knight’s arm around me.
“I’m so glad you guys could come out,” she says as she runs a hand through the front of her hair.
My eyes grow wide as the rock on her hand comes into view. I gasp and rush forward to grab her hand. We stand squealing together. I’m so happy for her.
“Oh my God, you’re engaged?”
“Yup, my baby did so good. You see this?” Sunny sings.
“Congratulations. He did amazing, on the ring and the fiancée,” I coo back as I turn her hand this way and that.
“That he did.”
“Congratulations, bro,” Knight says, moving to pull Jamel into another embrace.
I hug Sunny and rock her back and forth. “I’m so happy for you, girl,” I whisper.
“You know you’re going to help me plan the wedding and you’re my maid of honor,” she says.
“Of course. I’ll make as much time as I can. We’ll sit down and start a schedule to make sure I don’t miss out on anything,” I say excitedly.
“I love you, girl. I hope I’ll be helping you plan one soon,” she says and pulls away looking over at Knight.
“I don’t know about all that. Baby steps, love. Baby steps.”
“Whatever. I love this place. It’s perfect to celebrate.”
I turn to Knight as he grabs my fingers. He’s searching my face as he plays with them. I close the distance between us.
He lifts his other hand to cup my face and run his finger over my lower lip. I smile up at him. There’s this look in his eyes I don’t want to read too much into.
I bite my lip as he lifts my hand to his lips and kisses my ring finger. Then he laces our fingers together so that we can follow Sunny and Jamel to our seats. My heart and thoughts are racing.
What just happened? I know something did, I’m just not sure I can say what. Knight just said a whole lot without saying a word.
There’s this hum between us as I sit down. I can’t help leaning into it. A smooth banter starts between our group.
“It’s been a while since we’ve balled it out. You up for a game of hoops?” Jamel says to Knight.
“I’ll take you up on that. How about this weekend?”
I think its adorable that Jamel looks to Sunny to check if it’s cool with her. She gives him a nod and smile. Jamel pecks her lips then turns to Knight.
“Saturday morning work for you?”
“I’m there,” Knight says.
“Good evening, everyone. My name is Carly. I’ll be your server this evening. Can I start you all with drinks?”
We order drinks and appetizers, opening a tab to keep the drinks flowing. Sunny tosses out ideas for the wedding and claims my Saturday morning since Knight will be with Jamel. The whole time she’s talking, Jamel looks at her with so much love. Feeling Knight’s gaze on me, I turn to look at him.
“What?” I whisper.
Without a word, he places his finger beneath my chin and lifts my head to plant a searing kiss on my lips. I’m completely speechless when he pulls away. He places his forehead to mine, allowing his energy to flow into me.
I almost blurt out that I love him right here and now. However, it’s like my mouth has been glued shut. Instead, I take in the warmth he’s giving me and breathe him in.
