“I should…” As he climbed in my lap, kneeling on my thighs, he studied the timepiece and his voice grew distant. “I should ask if I can sit in your lap. Regular Doms seem to like rules and manners more than Daddies.”

He’d spent quite a bit of time thinking about the differences between Daddies and Doms.

“I don’t mind if you just come up and sit on my lap.” Wrapping my arm around him seemed like the best idea since he was perched precariously, almost kneeling on me, but he didn’t seem to mind because he leaned into my chest and let out a soft sigh. “That seems to be what you’d prefer and I have no problem working your preferences into our relationship.”

Nodding absentmindedly as he leaned over and caught my arm in his hands so he could study the watch, he answered me without thought. “I went out on a date with a dragon from Italy when he was vacationing in the States. He said he was a Dom, but I’m not sure that word translated right because he was just a dick.”

I wasn’t sure laughing would be appropriate and tried to figure out a thoughtful response, but Monroe didn’t have that concern. “I hope you explained that he wasn’t doing it right.”

“I did.” Lorne’s answer was cheerful, but he wasn’t ready to look away from the new toy he’d found. “Did you know that there are incredible variations in the quality of the diamonds? I can’t decide if it’s a manufacturing flaw or just designed to make me nuts.”

That was a question I wasn’t going to answer.

“Daddy Monroe will definitely be more lenient and put up with more shenanigans, but I think you’ll like my rewards for good behavior, and I will not make unreasonable rules.” He wouldn’t be able to follow them if they were too random, and I wasn’t going to set him up for failure or either of us up for frustration.

“Does he want me to be a little little or a bigger little or a middle? There might be other options but I can’t remember them right now.”

Because he was too busy trying to decide if I’d let him take apart my watch.

I would not.

“I think he’d rather you be happy and yourself. The rest he’s probably flexible with.” Monroe’s smile said I’d gotten that right, but I wasn’t sure it’d satisfied his monkey based on the frown that’d just appeared.

“That’s not fair.”

This was going to be an interesting explanation.

Chapter 4

Monroe

Monkey had the most adorable pout, but I knew taking it seriously would be the only way to handle the situation…once he started talking to me.

For the time being, he was still getting to know Carrick, so I stayed quiet and watched their fascinating get to know each other moment.

“I need to know how to make him happy, and if you won’t tell me, I have to figure it out by myself.” Lorne seemed to find that idea almost offensive based on the sour expression he was wearing.

“You just need to be yourself and you’ll make him happy. He’s your mate. There’s a reason you were fated.” Carrick rolled his eyes as Lorne scoffed.

“We’re fated and I’m not sure being myself will make you happy.” Lorne sounded like he wanted to stick his tongue out at Carrick, but it looked like he was trying to behave so he could keep playing with the watch.

“Nothing makes me happy, so that shouldn’t be your goal.” Carrick’s response made me want to roll my eyes, but I was trying to be supportive of the nonsense coming out of both of their mouths. “Ideally, you’re supposed to love me and be my perfect match.”

Love before perfection?

Had that been deliberate?

“What would your perfect match be like?” Lorne’s distracted tone made me question if he was completely tuned into the discussion or not.

“He’d be creative and submissive in some aspects of his life. He’d explore impact play with me in ways we could both enjoy. We’d also find compatible ways for him to submit.” Carrick must’ve noticed the way Lorne’s head cocked because he went into more detail without any verbal prompting.

“Everyone’s desires are on a spectrum and we would just need to figure out where we overlapped.” Carrick wasn’t always the chattiest person in the room, so I was impressed when he kept going. “I’m not expecting one hundred percent overlap. That’s an unreasonable goal based on what I’ve seen of mates.”

“What do you mean?” Lorne was still hunched over looking like he was trying to analyze each tiny diamond on the piece.

Carrick didn’t seem offended that his watch was more interesting than he was, though. “When dragons find their mates, a statistically significant portion of the time they have opposite strengths and weaknesses. Two halves of a whole, not copies of one another. Therefore, a large overlap of desires is the best outcome possible.”
