“I don’t know, but I thought I heard something. I’m going to check the alarm.”
“You checked it twice before we came to bed,” she says, but her voice lacks confidence.
“Just in case,” I tell her while I pull on my shirt and go to the closet. I’m thankful I moved the guns in here as soon as the girls arrived. After I enter the combination to open the safe, I load the rifle.
“Fraser?”
When I look over at Nyah, I see the fear in her eyes, and I go to her. “Hey, I’m here, and I’m not going to let anything happen to you or Mina. You understand that, right?” She nods, and I kiss her forehead. “Get dressed and go get in the bed with Mina. I’m sure it’s just me being paranoid after that call this afternoon, but I won’t take any chances. I got you, remember?”
“You do.” She kisses me on the lips before reaching for my T-shirt she’s been using as a nightgown.
I walk her out of the room we’re sharing and go look in on Mina. She’s fast asleep, and I wait for Nyah to get in bed with her before I go check the rest of the house. I start to second-guess myself when I check the alarm and see everything is fine. Maybe I’m getting Nyah worked up over nothing and making things worse.
There are camera points on the side of the house and at the garage, so I pull up the app on my phone to look at the feed. When I see there was a motion sensor activated, I go back to watch the video. As soon as I see the family of deer crossing the screen, I feel like an ass for scaring Nyah.
Sighing, I turn off my phone and then open the rifle to take out the bullets. As soon as it’s empty, I hear something coming from the back door. It doesn’t sound like deer walking around but more like metal on metal. What the hell?
Just then the lock on the back door quietly pops, and slowly the door swings open. The man standing there is one I’ve never seen before, but I already know who he is. This is Cole, Nyah's stepfather and Mina’s biological father.
He hasn’t noticed me yet so I don’t move a centimeter, not even to load the gun. I’ve got my rifle in one hand and bullets in the other but I’ll take this guy down with my bare hands if I have to.
Then I realize the light by the back door is blinding so since it’s pitch black in my living room, he can’t see shit. His eyes haven’t adjusted to the dark, so I decide to introduce him to the fuck around and find out portion of his evening.
As quietly as I can, I load the bullets into the chamber then reach for my cell. I keep the screen hidden from him as I dial the number and then put it back in my pocket.
It takes him a second, but when he turns in my direction, I cock the firing pin on the rifle and point it right at his chest.
“You must be Cole,” I say and then turn on the lamp beside me.
The room is bathed in light, and he blinks for a second then assesses his situation. He’s not scared shitless, so that means he’s used to having a gun trained on him. That’s not the kind of man I want anywhere near my girls.
“So you’re the man stealing my family?” He looks over my shoulder, and it’s all I can do not to shoot this fucker in the head.
I need to stay calm and get him out of here. I can’t kill him in my living room or I’ll scar Mina and Nyah for the rest of their lives. It will haunt those girls and give them nightmares, which is something I’m working to erase.
“Your family left you. I think it’s best you let them stay gone and get the fuck off my land. I’ve already got cause to shoot to kill since you broke into my home.”
