Jourdanne’s eyebrows shot up.

“That must be Keith! She mentioned some guy in her algebra class that she likes,” she told me. She then wiggled her eyebrows at me. “Any guy catch your eye yet?”

My face burned slightly as I looked away from her and shrugged, not knowing how to answer that question. I had come across a few guys who “caught my eye,” but the problem was that they were all three from the men’s hockey team.

First, there was Hugo. He was annoyingly cocky, but damn it, he looked good. And the way he would get close to me or grin at me made my heart race. But it pissed me off too! He thought he was hot shit, and I wasn’t going to stroke his ego.

Then, I met Jed and Colm, who caught me off guard. Not only were they handsome, but they were actually nice to me too. Really nice. Whenever I went to the cafeteria, I couldn’t help but keep an eye out for them.

But I wasn’t going to get involved with anyone, especially anyone on the men’s team. There was too much tension between us, and it wouldn’t look good on me to get tangled up with them. My team came first.

Besides… it’s not like any of them would choose to date me. There were so many pretty girls on this campus, and I knew how the guy athletes could be. They frothed at the mouth over hot sorority girls, and I certainly wasn’t one of those.

Hell, if I looked like Madison, they would be at my feet. She was always nominated for Homecoming Court or had two or three different guys trying to ask her out to prom. She was that sweet, pretty girl that got along with everyone. Meanwhile, I made enemies and told off guys that looked at me funny when I said I played hockey or knew relatively anything about sports.

Maybe if I looked prettier like her, I wouldn’t have been challenged or ridiculed so much.

“Nah,” I said as I shook my head.

“Oh, come on. I bet someone has been interested in you,” Jourdanne replied as she gave me a pointed look. “You’re hot stuff.”

I couldn’t help but laugh.

“I’m really not,” I assured her.

Madison had always been the beauty of the family with her long hair and petite figure. She had boys ogling over her since middle school, and that hadn’t stopped. Meanwhile, I was getting into arguments with guys over which hockey team was going to win the Stanley Cup that year. My attitude didn’t exactly score me any points with the boys, but I didn’t care back then. I didn’t even really care now, but that didn’t mean I lacked any sort of desire.

“I’m sure some sporty guy is going to swoop you up. That’s your type, right?” Jourdanne asked.

It didn’t make or break anything for me, but it was certainly an upside if whoever I dated like sports too since it was such a big part of my life. If things went my way, I wanted to play beyond college and hopefully go professional. That meant a lot of my time would be devoted to training, traveling, and press.

Even if that was a lot to handle, that was the dream. Not only could I play the sport I loved, but I wouldn’t ever struggle financially. I could help my mom and sister and spoil my niece. I could make every judgmental person in my hometown eat their words when they saw me playing on national television.

“I wouldn’t be against that,” I said.

Jourdanne pitched the quarterback of the football team and the pitcher of the baseball team to me as we got closer to the stadium, showing me photos and trying to wow me. None of them stuck out to me like the guys on the men’s hockey team I had met already.

“I’m going to keep looking for your dream man,” Jourdanne promised me. “Have a good practice!”

I waved at her before heading to the women’s locker room, nodding to Soraya and Suzette, my right and left wingers.

“I hope you guys got plenty of rest last night because we’re hitting the ice hard today!” I called out as everyone got their gear and uniforms on. I put on my pads and my white Yale jersey before taking a seat on a bench next to Lily to put on my skates.

“Did you sleep well, captain?” Lily asked with a teasing smirk as she fixed her blonde hair into a bun.

I laughed a little and nodded.

“Like a baby,” I replied as I worked my skates on. Once we were all ready to go, I led them out onto the ice where Coach Clinton was waiting for us.

“Hello, ladies! Let’s get moving!” Coach Clinton told us as we skated toward her. She was a tall, thin woman, almost lanky, with sharp cheekbones and thin, brown hair drawn back into a ponytail. However, she was tough as could be and didn’t let anyone run her over, especially the coach of the men’s team.
