“It’s okay,” I sigh. “I understand it, and honestly, it was actually a little entertaining.”

“You’re kidding, right?” he scoffs. “I barged in here like a dirty drunk hoping to get between your legs.”

“Yeah,” I grin, the memory of his raging cock pressed against my clit still so fresh in my mind. “I kinda liked it.”

Sean gives me a wicked smile, shaking his head before letting out a breath, and just when I think he’s about to make some kind of dirty joke, a strange hesitance flickers in his gaze. His hand digs into his pocket, and he visibly swallows as his eyes meet mine. “I’ve got something for you,” he tells me. “I honestly don’t know how you’re going to take it, though.”

My face falls, panic soaring through my chest. “Tell me that’s not a fucking ring, because like . . . I know we did the whole I love you thing, but this is way too soon, and no offense, but you are not even a little bit ready. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I know you’d be an incredible husband to me, but hold the fuck up.”

Sean laughs, not saying a damn word as he stares back at me, silently watching me freak out before putting me out of my misery. “You done?” he questions.

I swallow hard and nod, hoping like fuck I’ve misunderstood. “Depends.”

He takes my hand and flips it so he can see my open palm, and as my brows furrow, he places a mangled piece of metal right in the center before sitting back and watching me with deep curiosity.

I study the metal in my hand, having absolutely no idea what it is, when it hits me. It’s a bullet.

Confusion rocks through me, and my gaze shifts from Sean’s to the bullet and back again. I don’t know how to take this or even what to think. Is this my bullet?

“This isn’t . . .” I question, meeting his intense stare.

He nods ever so slightly, and I watch the hesitation creep back into his eyes as he second-guesses if this was a good idea. “Yeah, it is,” he tells me with a slight cringe. “I found it after you were taken into surgery and thought you’d want it one day. But if it’s too much, I can get rid of it. I didn’t mean to freak you out or anything.”

Lifting my hand, I take a deeper look at the bullet, taking in the squished metal and remembering the fierce, burning agony this little fucker caused.

Sean closes my hand around the metal and forces my eyes back to his. “I know you don’t like talking about it, but I wanted you to have it as a reminder of what you’ve achieved. You went through this awful thing and have come out the end. So many others would have crumbled going through that, but you soared. You showed unbelievable amounts of strength, and I’m so fucking proud of you. So, don’t think of this as a reminder of the fear and pain from that day, but use it as your motivation to always keep going.”

I open my palm and look down at the bullet in a new light. He’s right. I shouldn’t fear this scrappy piece of metal. After all, I conquered it and survived. It can’t hurt me anymore. Hell, I made this bullet my bitch. It should go up on a pedestal so each time I look at it, I’ll remember that I kicked ass.

Seeing the change on my face, Sean lights up. “Do you have plans for today?” he questions.

“Nope,” I smile as his hands run up and down my back.

“Good,” he smiles. “Then I’m kidnapping you again.”

“Careful now,” I tell him, a wicked grin stretching across my lips. “I know this kickass lawyer who’d bust your ass wide open for even suggesting such horrendous things.”

Sean laughs. “Let me at him,” he tells me, his lips crushing to mine.

With that, he lifts me off the couch and places me safely on my feet before ordering me to grab some clothes. I do as I’m told, and before I know it, Sean is stealing my car keys out of my hand and pulling out of my parking spot.

Chapter 22

SEAN

With Gigi’s hand in mine, I drive her car down my driveway and find a police cruiser parked next to my truck. Tom is halfway up the stairs with my keys in his hand when he hears the sound of Gigi’s tires on the driveway and turns around, the relief in his eyes almost comical.

Gigi and I get out of her car and meet him halfway. “Hey,” he says as he tosses my keys. “Just started my shift when I found your truck parked outside some rundown bar.”

“Yeah, thanks,” I say as he looks me over, making sure I’m doing alright after yesterday.
