Mate, I call out. My sweet mate.

I’m okay, Remy assures me. Let’s find these assholes.

And then we’re having a long conversation about you two. Rey.

I thought I was the only one who thought it was fucking weird. Finnick.

Not just you. Ewan.

Nightmares. Am I right? Finnick.

You’re such a tool, Finn. Judd.

I ignore them all to focus on Remy. Determination thrums through the bond from him, which feels a lot better than the cold, all-consuming fear he’d felt. His snout is low to the ground, following a trail only he seems to smell. I fall in step behind him, and the rest of the pack falls in line.

I’m getting total Alpha vibes from our baby boy. Finnick.

Because he is your Alpha, I growl at him.

But you’re… Finnick. Wanna fill us in, man?

Remy shoves all my memories I’d shown him through the bond, along with his conversation with Cash. Now they know. Remy is my fated mate. We share everything now. Even leadership. Both of us are Alphas, born to kings and destined to lead.

I thought fated mates had to be virgins or something. Ewan.

Not now. Rey. Not the time to talk about this. We can discuss it over bacon and eggs and pancakes. After we kill those bastards.

Fuck, I’m starving. Finnick.

Guilt tickles through me, revealing my shame to everyone. Judd grimaces because he senses my dread. The truth of the fact that I didn’t wait for my true mate.

I know you fucked Judd. Remy. But we’d already bonded eighteen years ago so you never could form an emotional connection with him which is necessary to complete a mating bond. You were always mine, and I was always yours.

Oh, goodie. Finnick. Judd, that means you can finally bone Ewan and not get your throat torn out.

Finnick! Ewan and Judd both at once, voices full of exasperation.

Now’s not the time to gossip. Rey. Anyone else wishing for a moment of silence? Just me?

I think it’s cool as fuck hearing you all inside my head. Finnick. I’m gonna spy on you all when you’re having sex.

Pervert. Rey.

That’s not what you said at the last full moon when I was balls deep—

Finnick! Everyone this time.

The playful banter of our pack cuts short when Remy halts to a stop. Darkness creeps toward us like an inky fog. Whatever hides in it is wrong and sick and fucking twisted.

The Beast. Remy.

Theb East, I correct, all my father’s lessons flooding into me. Not a beast. He’s nothing but an incubi shifter with a penchant for theatrics. The fucker couldn’t kill you when you were a child. He’ll never be able to do it now that you’re an Alpha of our pack and fated mates with me. We were destined to be together.

Remy stands taller at those words, turning his head to face the darkness. But not alone. I’m by his side, and our pack is at our back. We are the hunters. The wolves. Predators of the night. We’ll stalk them, pin them down, and tear them to shreds.

It’s what we do.

What we’re instinctually driven to do.

“King Graves,” a deep, guttural voice says from within the dark fog. “And King Thatcher. How adorable.”

Cash snorts out a laugh from somewhere in the shadows.

We don’t run into the fog, but remain still as it creeps toward us, licking at our fur as it passes over us, shrouding us in the dark.

He’ll eventually reveal himself. That’s what incubi shifters do. They make a fantastic show of their work. It’s both art and a warning to them. Incubi shifters are sexually driven beings who draw power from their victims when they fuck them. The fact that this monster was responsible for the deaths of Remy’s entire family has me thrumming with barely contained rage. I’m even further incensed that I could have prevented this had I just remembered what Dad taught me rather than shoving anything that was remotely painful to the back of my mind.

This could have been useful to learn a long time ago. Finnick.

I know. The guilt is all much to bear. Fuck, I know. I’m sorry.

Remy pushes the memories of that night through the bond and into my head. It’s violent and disgusting. Theb East tried to take little Remy. Thankfully, he failed. It doesn’t make the trauma Remy endured as Theb tried any less horrifying. Theb was successful with all those campers, with Remy’s mom, and with Hope.

A flash of the little girl I’d met once with her sweet smile and dark hair only further stokes the fires blazing inside of me.

“King Thatcher,” Theb calls out, his voice echoing off the trees. “Come join us. Join my son, and together you can both rule the entire Kingdom of Wolves once we take over and I eventually step down. My son has waited a long time to become an Alpha and king. Soon.”
