How had Venus not known about her nightmares? Had they not seen each other in that long a time? It kind of sounded like they might have parted ways soon after making it to the States. Sounded like Millie had been a teenager. Had she been alone all this time?
Well, that ended now. One way or another. He had no use for a woman of his own. Never again. But Cain could definitely find a place for her. Either in Bones or ExFil. Assuming her skills were what he thought they were. And more than just dirty fighting. At least, that’s what he’d tell himself until he could admit otherwise.
Somewhere in there, Shadow dozed off himself. When he woke, Millie was lying on top of him, her face buried in his neck. He smiled. He’d closed his arms around her, holding her possessively. It felt better than anything he could remember. Even the one woman he’d let into his life had never felt like this. There had been his lies and her greed hanging over them then. Now, all he had was a need to protect this little warrior. Well, that, and he wanted to possess her.
She was beautiful in an edgy way. The blue hair. The dark makeup. The warrior capabilities. It was all crammed into this small package of sex and sin, and it made his head spin. She was so small he was afraid she’d break in his brutal embrace. But she was strong. She’d taken on men his size and won. She fought hard and dirty. Anything it took to win. But she still looked at Venus with something like hero worship. The big sister might be out of Millie’s life, but the younger woman still thought she walked on water.
He glanced at his watch. Time to get up and finish preparing for the mission. Just as he nuzzled her head to wake Millie, Venus screeched angrily. The sound probably woke everyone within a mile radius.
“You little shlyukha!” Venus snapped. “Do you have to fuck every dick you find?”
She tried to pull Millie off by the hair, but Shadow rolled, putting himself between Millie and Venus.
“Venus, back off,” Shadow bit out.
“You back off! You’re just like every man out there. Can’t keep dick in your pants!”
“This is none of your business, but I didn’t fuck your sister.” He tried to keep his voice as calm and reasonable as possible.
“Sure you did.” Venus snorted. “Just like she fucked Mikhail instead of pumping him for information!”
“I got the information I needed,” Millie yelled back, struggling to her feet and facing Venus. “And I didn’t fuck anyone to get it. That may be how you get information, but I make allies. Not fuck buddies.”
“Suka!”
“Sweet baby Jesus in the manger,” Shadow muttered, scrubbing a hand over his face. “If the two of you can’t get along, I’m only taking one of you.” He stared Venus down. “Guess which one a’ ya’s staying here.”
“Sure. Take your little shlyukha. See how far you get. She’ll hang you out and get you killed.”
“I never knew you were such a spoiled little child, Venus,” Shadow said softly. “What does it matter who your sister fucks? Why do you care so much?”
“Because Mikhail was mine! And she fucked him anyway!”
Millie snorted. “See, that’s where you made your mistake. You let your emotions cloud your judgment. Mikhail was yours. Still would be if you hadn’t accused him of fucking me. You got him fired. Probably exiled or shot! What you were too blind to see was how much he loved you.” Millie tugged on her bulletproof vest, pulling it into place and fastening down the Velcro tightly. “He loved you, and you ruined his life. All because you took something you saw out of context. He leaned in, not to kiss me, but to warn me. Had we not left that night, we’d both have been sold. Just like they plan on doing with little Katya. That’s why I wanted her out that night. That’s why I insisted on going now even knowing there was little chance of getting out. All this?” Millie circled her finger in the air. “All this is on you. Yet, it’s me risking my life to get her out. I’ll be one to cut into her flesh and remove devices they put into her. You can just sit here on your ass and think of all ways I fucked you over. When this is over, I’ll be gone out of your life. So fuck you. Just… fuck you.”
Tears tracked down Millie’s face by the time she got finished. But she sniffed once, then swiped her forearm over her eyes before spitting on the ground at Venus’s feet. Then she left the tent.
Shadow stood and moved in front of Venus when she looked like she might go after Millie. “No. You stay here.”
