I also knew that I needed to get the dog away from the other people in line before they accused him of being aggressive. I needed to check on Sterling as well, so I gently tugged on his hand and said, "Come with me, sweetheart."
I led him away from the line and to a picnic table, where I sat next to him. Cooper stood at his side instead of lying down like he normally would. "What's wrong?" I asked again.
This time, Sterling answered, "He's here."
I looked around but didn't see anyone familiar. "Who's here?"
He swallowed hard and replied, "The man who attacked me and Cooper. He was ordering at the window."
"Are you sure?"
He nodded. "I'll never forget his voice; deep and raspy with a slight accent. I also recognized his smell of cheap cigars, and I think Cooper did too." Sterling reached down to pet the dog, who stepped closer. His behavior suddenly made perfect sense; he was protecting his master.
"It's okay," I told the pair as I watched the man get his food and sit at a table on the other side of the lot. "He hasn't noticed us, and he's sitting far away."
"We should call the police," Sterling suggested as I was already pulling my phone from my pocket, happy I'd programmed the officer's number into my contacts just in case.
He answered on the second ring, "Officer Purdy."
I kept my voice low when I said, "My name is Beckett Rice. You responded to a break in at my boyfriend Sterling's house last week."
"I remember. Is everything alright?"
"We found the guy," I answered excitedly.
"I'm sorry?”
I explained to him where we were, and how Sterling and Cooper had recognized the man.
"Officer Long and I are a few blocks away. We will be there soon to question him. Do not approach him, do you understand? Even if he tries to leave; just get a good description of his appearance and his vehicle if he enters one."
"Yes, sir." He ended the call, and Sterling and I sat in silence as we waited. I stroked my hand over his back to soothe him, while he pet Cooper's head.
I also took the opportunity to get a good look at the bastard who had attacked my sweet man. He wasn't what I expected; he was an average-looking guy who ordinarily wouldn't give me any reason for concern.
When the police cruiser pulled into the lot, it wasn't running its sirens or lights. The officers parked and calmly got out of the car, like they were just coming to get something to eat.
But the man took notice. He sat up straighter in his seat, and placed his food on the tabletop. When the officers approached us, the man noticed Sterling and Cooper for the first time, and his eyes widened. He rose from his table and began walking away.
"There he goes," I told the policemen, pointing him out, "In the black jacket."
The man broke out into a sprint, and the officers chased after him. They caught him easily, and each took one of his arms as they walked him back to the cruiser. When the trio passed us, Cooper growled again, and Sterling squeezed my hand.
"You did this, didn't you?" The man spat at Sterling. "I should have killed your fucking dog."
I leapt from my seat, but Officer Long gave me a warning glare before loading the man into the back of the cruiser.
Once the door was shut, the officer told us, "We're taking him to the station for questioning." I wasn't sure what there was too question; he basically admitted to what he'd done, but I nodded my understanding. "We'll call if we need anything from you. Have a good evening." And that was it. He climbed into the car with his partner, and they pulled out of the lot.
I sat in stunned silence as I tried to absorb everything that just happened. Eventually, the crowd that had been staring went back to their food and conversations. Unsure what to do, I asked Sterling, "Would you like me to get you something to eat now?"
He shook his head. "I'm not really hungry anymore." I understood; in all of the excitement, I lost my appetite as well. "Is it okay if we just go home?"
"Of course."
Silence hung over us as we drove home, and as the three of us sat together on the couch. Anticipation and expectation clung to the air as Sterling and I waited with our phones resting on our knees. If the police needed us, we were ready.
It was Sterling's phone that rang nearly two hours later. He answered the call on speaker, "Hello?"
"Is this Sterling Dunn?"
"It is."
"Sterling, this is Officer Purdy. I just wanted to call and thank you for your help today, and to tell you that the man who attacked you is being held in the county jail until his plea deal is processed."
