So, I’m in the garage, working on what she was after without telling her what I’m up to. Josie is on the back deck, legs tucked beneath her, laptop on her thighs, working away. I didn’t want to interrupt what she had to get done with this new deadline she’s working on. I figured now was as good as time as ever to get started. It doesn’t bother me too much that her kitchen isn’t done. The rewards are having us going back and forth between both of our places. If she’s on a tight schedule, needing to work later, I hit her place. If I need to work on cabinets or paperwork, we’re here. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that she and I in the kitchen together comes with a whole slew of benefits, my hands all over her body, her sneaking a feel herself, our mouths on one another, clothes disappearing, dinner being put on hold, specifically last night when neither of us could take it any longer. I bent her over the kitchen counter, sunk my dick inside her tight-as-fuck cunt, my fingers on her clit, and took her until Josie was screaming my name.

I pick up the piece of wood and look at the grain, wanting to see it in a natural light. I like the way it’s going, trying to mirror-image it from the magazine Josie showed me. The long wooden cutting-board-shaped design is ready to be wiped down with water before I start the staining process. A coat of stain, let it dry, sand it one more time, put another coat of the natural color on, let it sit overnight, and then seal it so it’ll be safe for her to use in any way—food, washing, or as a decoration.

The pulling up of a vehicle has me stopping and turning around from my walk back into the garage. It’s Wes’s vehicle. Fucking finally. Though I’d have hoped he would have called, given me the chance to talk to him when Josie’s vehicle wasn’t in the driveway, and it be on a neutral place. Such is life. I continue my walk back inside and place the board on my worktable, head to the fridge, and pull out a bottle of beer. I’ll need more than one with the talk we’re about to have.

“Hey, Dad,” Wes says behind me. I’ve got the fridge open, beer in my hand, about to pop the top and finish it in one gulp when I hear my son. I grab another beer, figuring we’ll both need or want one.

“Hey, bud, how ya been?” I turn around and offer him a drink while I walk toward him, wanting to get a good look at my son. I’d like to say not hearing from him for over a week isn’t normal. Sadly, it is, especially when it comes time for him to hide from a brewing storm.

“Thanks. Been busy. The new job has me hustling, but I’m liking it so far.” His version of busy and mine must be completely different. I’m not going to address the giant elephant between us.

“Nothing wrong with that. You talk to Nan or Pops recently?” Usually, he’ll check in with them if I don’t hear from him.

“Yeah, had dinner with them today. Since I was in the neighborhood, figured I’d stop by. Sorry I haven’t returned your call or text.” I pop the top of my beer and take a few healthy sips. Where the fuck did I go wrong with this boy?

“No problem. You’re a grown man now. Got a fiancée to answer to, not me, Wes.” Acid churns in my stomach at bringing up Raquel. The worst part about all of this is, he doesn’t even look remorseful.

“Speaking of that, whose SUV?” Wes asks, pointing at Josie’s vehicle behind him with his thumb.

“Josie’s.” He wants to beat around the bush? Two can play this fucking game.

“Josie who?” Oh, boy, here we go. I finish my drink. The trash can is a few steps away, and instead of tossing it in from where I’m standing, I make my way closer, ready to hit the fridge for another beer.

“Josie Preston.” I look back at him, watching as he digests the news. It takes him a minute before then I see the moment clarity hits him.

“My Josie Preston?” A chuckle escapes me, and I cross my arms over my chest. This kid, he’s fucked around on every single woman he’s ever had that I’m aware of, and now he’s trying to say Josie was his.

“Not yours, Wes, mine. And I’m pretty sure there hasn’t been a single woman you’ve been around who is yours, judging by the fact you can’t keep your dick or your hands to yourself where other women are concerned.” So much for keeping my damn mouth shut. Coop, Gia, my parents, Josie, they’re all going to say, ‘I told you so.’
