“I’m too wired to sleep,” she says.

I float closer to her. “Why?”

“I just couldn’t wait to see you.”

Right answer.

I pin her between my body and the side of the pool. I have her body submitting to me before I can even stop myself. My hard cock pushes inside her welcoming heat, and we moan.

“I needed this,” she whispers.

“Me too,” I say, not wanting to ask her what she really means by that statement.

My body shifts slightly and she grips me tighter.

“Don’t stop,” she whines when I stall.

I stare into her compelling eyes. “Listen,” I tell her. “We’re going to discuss why you were at that fight tonight, but right now, I need to be as deep inside you as I can get. You turn me on in every way. I can’t get enough.” I push deeper inside her.

She moans as I palm her right tit. “Devereaux,” she whispers.

“That’s it. Enjoy my cock.” I keep pushing, and before long we’re both moving to the rhythm of each other. Our bodies creating a ripple in the pool.

My body climbs toward release, and my hands become greedy for her. I can’t stop touching her. With one hand wrapped around her throat, and the other squeezing her ass, she comes undone just for me.

“Such a good girl,” I whisper into her ear.

A few minutes later I’m spiraling down with her, my body coming alive with every touch. Fuck.

After our bodies have calmed, I release her and she floats toward the hot tub at the other end of the pool.

I follow her. “Why were you there?”

She shrugs. “Raven invited me.”

A part of me doesn’t want to believe her. I want her to tell me she knows who’s running this prostitution ring. But as her green eyes gaze up at me, I believe her.

Maybe Raven isn’t involved and just invited Swan to hang out. It could happen.

I ask again just to be sure. “Are you telling me the truth?”

She looks me square in the eyes and says, “Yes.”

Chapter 31

Chloe

* * *

I hate lying. My mother always taught me to be an honest person. She’d say, “Nobody likes a liar.”

I know, Mom. I know.

I feel like I’m stuck between a rock and a hard place. Like a train and a tree. There’s no easy way to handle lying to Devereaux, but I have to. I can’t very well have him acting like Captain America out there, trying to save the day.

Sure, I trust him, but I can’t jeopardize my career. I can’t risk this case.

“You don’t need to take me shopping,” I say as Devereaux pulls up to a bougie shop downtown.

“You need something to wear for tonight, right?”

I think about my sad wardrobe that mainly consists of sweat pants and police academy sweatshirts. “Yeah, but—”

He places a finger on my lips. “Consider it an employee bonus.”

I kiss his finger. There’s no sense in arguing with him, so I let him lead me inside the swanky boutique. The store’s filled with extravagant gowns and the store owner nearly runs over to us when we walk inside.

She extends her hand for Devereaux to shake. “Welcome to Evelyn’s Elegant Gowns. What can I help you with today?” Her assessing eyes roam over my jeans and sweater, and I can sense the judgment already.

“I need a gown for her to wear tonight,” Devereaux says. “Something with a mask.”

She turns and heads toward a rack in the back. “I have just the dress. Follow me.”

Devereaux pulls out his phone and motions for me to follow the lady. “I’ll be here.” He taps on his phone and I follow Evelyn to the rear of the store.

She rummages through the rack of gowns until she says, “Here it is.” She removes a short white dress with a plunging neckline. Graceful feathers cover the elegant skirt.

“Wow,” I say, taking the dress from her. “This is amazing.”

“Let’s try it on, dear. I think you’ll look fabulous in it.” She places her finger on her chin. “I know I have a mask to match around here somewhere.” She sets me up in a dressing room and takes off to find the mask.

I slip on the dress and preen in front of the mirror. I’ve never worn material so soft. It hugs my curves, and I’m in love with it, but then I look at the exorbitant amount on the price tag. Ouch.

Evelyn knocks on my door. “Let’s see what it looks like,” she calls out.

I step out of the dressing room, mentally calculating how I can reimburse Devereaux for this dress. I’ll just pick a cheaper one.

Devereaux wanders back to this part of the store, still tapping at his phone, but he glances up and stops. “Damn,” he whispers. “Evelyn, we’ll take that dress.” He’s already pulling out his wallet before I can say I don’t expect him to pay for it.
