When I smile at her, she looks confused until I throw some bills on the table.

“Are you finished?” I ask, and she nods. “Good, then let’s go.”

“Yeah, I should probably get to my next lab.” She gets up from the table while trying to avoid looking at me.

“I think you’ll miss it,” I say as I take her hand in mine.

“What? Why?” She has to move her feet faster to keep up with my long strides as I hurry us out of the restaurant.

“Because we’re getting married.”

Chapter Five

Emma

“Beckett, have you lost your mind?” I’m tugging on his hand, so he lets me go, but my stupid feet are still following him.

“No, I’m pretty sure I’m sane for the first time in my life.”

“This can’t be happening.” I say it more to myself than him, but I see his smirk. Why does it have to be so damn sexy?

“I checked, and there’s not a waiting period after getting a license. We’ll do it all at once and then you can go back to class.”

“This is like the world's shittiest proposal, you know that, right?”

“But one you’ll always remember.” I don’t have time to react before we stop in front of a big SUV, and he opens the door for me. “Let’s move, baby, I need to get this locked in.”

“Beckett.” I look around like someone is going to come out and explain what the hell is going on.

“Emma.” He says my name in the same tone but grabs my hips to pull me closer. “Give me one reason we shouldn’t do this.”

“Are you seriously asking me that question? There are a million reasons why we shouldn’t do this. Because we don’t know each other, because I can’t just marry a stranger, because—”

“We’ve got our whole lives to learn all the stuff that doesn’t count. Like what’s your favorite ice cream flavor and what kind of movies you like.”

“Chocolate and romances, but don’t change the subject.” I nearly stomp my foot as he presses me against his car. He leans down, and his full lips brush against mine. “Don’t kiss me,” I warn him, but it sounds weak even to my own ears.

“Is it because you know the second I do it, you’ll be at my mercy?” His tongue slides across my bottom lip, and I swear to god, my panties become instantly soaked.

“You are making me crazy.” My voice is barely above a whisper as he rubs the hard length of his cock against my lower belly.

“This is what you’re doing to me.”

I can’t hold back my moan, and when he bites my lip, I give in. The way he kisses me is like he’s the center of the universe and I’m the thing that’s pulled to it. He’s gravity, and all I can do is hold on as he devours my cries of pleasure.

“I’ll beg if that’s what you need,” he says, his sinful mouth moving down my neck. “I’ll get on one knee and buy you a diamond the size of South Dakota.”

“Why South Dakota?” Clearly my brain has left my body because I’m not making sense.

“Because it’s bigger than North Dakota.” He smiles as his tongue tastes the spot just below my ear.

“You’re insane.” My breath catches in my throat as he pushes his cock against me. Without thinking it through, I rock my hips against it, needing to feel that thick shaft pulse.

“Yes.” He doesn’t even try to deny it. “Now get your sweet ass in the fucking car before I put you in it.”

“Beckett.” I hesitate one last time, and he cups my face in both his hands.

“What’s wrong with giving in?” He’s so certain, and when I search his blue eyes, there’s not an ounce of hesitation. “Life is short, Emma. I think we’ve both learned that the hard way. For the first time, I see the road ahead, and that’s with you.” He kisses me once more like he can’t stand not doing it. “Say yes, baby. I’ll take care of you for the rest of our lives.”

“Holy shit,” I whisper, because as crazy as this is, I think I’m going to do it.

“That’s my girl.” His grin spreads wide like he’s won, and damn him, he has.

“Great, now we’re both insane,” I say, and he pulls me in his arms and spins me around.

___

Two hours later, we’re in front of a justice of the peace at city hall and signing the paperwork. My hands shake as I scratch my signature on the dotted line and the clerk stamps it.

“You may kiss your bride,” the officiant says, and Beckett turns to me.

“She’s my wife now.” His words echo in my head as he pulls me close and gently touches his lips to mine. The kiss is soft and sweet as he tucks my hair behind my ear and then looks at me with those clear blue eyes. “Ready to go home?”
