Dane scowled. “If you kill the Board, then all Killer Crows will descend onto this mansion and destroy it.”
“I hate agreeing with Dane.” Rue nodded. “However, he is correct. More death won’t help Kashmere’s rein. You two must remain calm and do your best to not kill anyone in the next ninety days.”
“I know. I know.” I headed off the balcony and back into the office. “I’m just itching to get rid of Simon. My maid Gloria told me that he’s ordering the staff around to prepare for an event.”
Rue frowned. “What the fuck? This is news to me.”
“Well, it can’t be news to you or any of us anymore.” Merik growled. “Simon can’t be up in my uncle and aunt’s house running it like it’s his. That’s bullshit.”
I nodded. “And disrespectful to me.”
“Everyone calm down. You two are considered the most trigger happy people in history. Let’s make the haters liars and keep it peaceful.” Dane rushed ahead of us and opened the door leading to the office. “Let’s do one thing at a time. First, the meeting. Then, we’ll figure out what is going on with Simon’s orders.”
Merik showed his machine gun. “Or we can go in there and blast them.”
Chuckling, I went through the door.
Rue groaned, “Relax, Merik.”
Merik ignored her and walked on my side. “Kash, do you even have to go to this damn board meeting? You’re the Chairman, not Simon.”
Rue chimed in, “If she misses one meeting and it’s not a major excuse—like hospitalization—the board can vote you out. It’s part of the job. They’ll see it as complete disrespect.”
Merik frowned. “But, our family started the Killer Crows.”
“And your family put these rules in place.” Dane opened the door for me.
I walked through.
My six security guards rose and gathered around me. It was hard to get used to so many people following me around all day, when all my life I’d been ignored.
Dane continued, “While the Jones bloodline can lead the Killer Crows, the Board provides the checks and balances to keep the machine correctly running.”
I felt my shoulders heavy with burden.
Rue added, “And her great-great-grandparents wanted to make sure that the Killer Crows always remained strong and united. Therefore, if the Board of Directors have a unanimous vote in the next ninety days, in which they think the present Chairman isn’t on point, Kashmere would have to step down.”
My throat went dry. “I can tell that they’re itching to vote me out. I see it in their eyes.”
“You’re right about that.” Dane nodded. “There’s been a lot of whispering among the Board. Some of these guys have grandkids your age. They’re not excited about you handling this much power, money, and responsibility.”
Rue added, “And Simon is campaigning for his son to rule.”
If Simon could prove that I was unsuitable to rule in the next ninety days, the Board would vote for a new Chairman.
If I was able to keep it together for ninety days, then the Board would approve my probationary period where I could make my own decisions. While they’d be watching me the whole time, that year would allow for patience in any mistakes and faith that I could work everything out.
I increased my pace. “What can we do about Simon?”
Rue sighed. “Out of the fifteen executive directors, he has eight in his pocket.”
Dane walked on my right. “You have the rest of the executives on your side, mainly because they helped raise your little behind.”
“I wouldn’t say they’re on your side.” Rue raised her one finger. “They’re rooting for you and they’re going to be patient with any mistakes, but they would rather an older man sat on the throne.”
“Good point.” Dane led us toward the gold staircase.
“If you step out of line too much or appear disrespectful. . .” Rue headed down first. “You could lose some of them.”
“Maintain respect.” I nodded. “And what about the shareholders?”
A worried expression covered Rue’s face. “Our spies on the inside have been quiet and not given me a report yet.”
“Do you think they were intercepted somehow?”
“No way.” Rue shook her head. “I think that the inmates don’t know what to think of you yet.”
“A lot of those guys have been in jail for a long time. You were a baby when most of them went inside. They’re still watching and assessing.”
Rue let out a long breath. “Which means that you should do your best for these next ninety days and at least appear like you are willing to work with them.”
I picked up my pace. “I will, but it will be hard.”
“Saying it will be hard is already showing defeat,” Dane added. “You’ve got this.”
Yeah, but I think the Board is a bunch of old close-minded idiots.
My siblings, Romeo and Chanel listened to the Board in every way.
Romeo never settled down with anyone. He had to hide his bisexuality from the whole Board in fear that someone would rise up against him due to it.
