Across time and space, our minds become one, tethered together under moon as in sun.

Your thoughts will be mine, my dreams become yours, within arm’s reach as on distant shores.

Choices remain, for me and for thee,

As I will it, so mote it be.

Hello? Are you there?

I grin down at her. I can hear her voice in my head as plainly as if she’s speaking aloud.

I’m here. Can you hear me now?

She laughs, clearly delighted. “So weird. But kind of fun. Now, I’m totally exhausted. Let’s go upstairs and get some sleep.”

“I’m all for that.”

I return the grimoire to its place, and then with Lorelei’s hand in mine, I lead her up the stairs to the bedroom.

I can hear her thoughts.

I’m so tired. Why does he have such a good butt? This is a lot of stairs. I need to work out more.

“I’m tired, too. I’m glad you like my butt, and I think you’re in fine shape.”

Lorelei laughs again. “Yep, you can hear me. I’ll have to watch what I think. Though I have no idea how to do that.”

“We’ll figure it out.”

Chapter Eighteen

Lorelei

This has been the most productive week I’ve had in over a year. Things have seemed normal all week since the night of the ball. There have been no scary things jumping out, no music putting me in a suicidal trance, and without tempting fate, I could almost say we’re just a couple of normal people living our lives.

Witchy lives, sure, and I can read my man’s thoughts, but all in all, it’s been pretty mundane.

I even wrote more than a quarter of my book this week. With most of my research done, the words just poured out of me, and I found myself at the computer more than I was away from it. It felt great.

But all the quiet makes me nervous because Samhain is just a week away, and I know we’re about to have a shitstorm on our hands.

At least, we’ve had a week to rest and recharge.

With more than half of a chapter already written for the day, I carry my empty coffee mug into the kitchen to get a refill. Xander returned from flying over Salem just a little while ago and is currently reading in the library.

So, I fix him a cup of coffee, as well, then carry both mugs into the library, where I find him hunched over an open book on the table before him.

“I didn’t know if you’d want it, but I made you some coffee.” I set the mug at his elbow and look over his shoulder to see what his reading material is. “Are you reading about vampires?”

“Yeah.” He reaches for the coffee and smiles up at me. “Thanks for the coffee.”

“Do you suspect that vampires are holding Hallows End hostage?”

His lips turn up in a slight smile, and it sends tingles down my spine. For the love of Freya, the man is beautiful.

“I kind of love that you think about how attracted you are to me so often,” he says casually. “But you’re going to give me a big head.”

“Yeah, yeah.” I can’t help but laugh and kiss his cheek. “You know you’re hot. What’s up with the vampires?”

“I needed a palate cleanser.” He shrugs a shoulder and watches me over the rim of his mug. “How’s the writing?”

“It’s been going really well. I’m almost done for the day already. I have to tell you, now that we can see what the other sees, along with knowing our thoughts, it’s so cool when you’re the raven. No wonder you love shifting into it so often. It’s exhilarating.”

He tips his head to the side, watching me. “It hadn’t occurred to me that you’d be able to see that. I’m glad you can because it’s not something I can really put into words.”

“I can see that. Also, the process of actually shifting is so weird. I guess I always thought it would hurt, but it doesn’t.”

“If it hurt, I wouldn’t do it very often.”

“Makes sense. Do you notice anything that I do that surprises you?”

“Your thoughts are fascinating. You carry a lot of anxiety you don’t voice, and that’s something we’ll have to talk about sometime because I want you to talk to me about that stuff. And you have one hell of an imagination.”

“Always have.” I wink at him and head for the door. “I’m going to go finish writing while I’m in the groove. Breena texted me. She wants us all to meet at the aunts’ house later. Does that work for you?”

“It does. Just let me know when you’d like to go over.”

“Okay.” I turn to him, but he’s already reabsorbed in the story he was reading. I know I could open myself up and see the words he’s reading if I wanted to, but that’s incredibly distracting. And if I did that, I wouldn’t get anything else done. It’s been a week of figuring out this psychic thing between us, but I think we have it down now.
