If she’s changed her mind about me, I don’t know how I’m going to take it.

I’ve never had my heart broken and she has the ability to completely shatter it into a million pieces.

I feel my heart already cracking as I open the door and get out.

CHAPTER SIX

Lara

I’m all lightheaded and woozy as I step out of the car and close the door. I take a few deep calming breaths as I lean my back against the car and look up. Stars shine through the hole in the broken ceiling.

This is all so overwhelming. It’s all happening so fast.

It’s like a firehose of emotion and feelings bursting into me all at once. I just want to slow down, take a step back, get my bearings, clear my head, and really, take the time to enjoy this.

I’ve been waiting forever for a man like Dillon to come into my life and now that he’s here I want to savor every second of it. Every touch. Every kiss.

His door opens and I turn around with my cheeks reddening. He’s going to think I’m a total loser now.

“Are you okay?” he asks in that deep growly voice that’s so freaking sexy. Just the sight of him over the roof of the car, looking at me with concern in those breathtaking green eyes… It gets me every time. How can I ever say no to this man?

Looking at him like this, I wish I hadn’t left the car. I wish we were back in there right now, kissing, touching, exploring. What the hell was I thinking?

“Yeah,” I say as I smile with embarrassment. “I was just a…”

“Caught off guard?” he finishes. “Of the enormity of it?”

“Yes,” I say, wondering how he can already finish my thoughts. We’re as in tune as soul mates. It’s both unnerving and thrilling to experience. “It’s not that I didn’t want to… do that with you. I just…”

“Take your time,” he says in a soft calming voice as he walks around the hood of the car to join me.

My eyes are locked on him as he comes. This man even walks sexy. No wonder he was the star of the show back there.

He leans his back onto the car beside me, crosses his arms, and looks up at the stars. I just look at him.

“Do you think we were ever both looking up at the stars at the same time and wondering where our other half was?”

“I do that all the time,” I say with a soft laugh.

Those piercing green eyes land back on me and I get a warm shiver. “So do I.”

I reach for his hand and slide my fingers through his. He grips my hand tight.

“We’re here together now.”

He smiles. “Thank God for that.”

We both smile for a long moment as we gaze into each other’s eyes. He slowly leans down and kisses me softly.

It’s a warm delightful romantic kiss that has my toes curling in my shoes. It’s intimate and lovely and it makes me realize I want more. I want to be kissed like that every day.

I lick my lips and smile shyly as he pulls away.

“Are you really a virgin?” I ask him. It just blurts out of me. I’m having a hard time believing it. Not because I don’t think he’d wait for his dream girl, but it’s just… he’s so good at everything. Those skilled lips are magical.

“You find it hard to believe?”

“A little.”

He looks me up and down with a fire in his eyes. “If you could see through my eyes, you wouldn’t find it hard to believe.”

“What do you mean?”

He shakes his head slowly as he looks at me. “How could I possibly not wait for you? You’re perfect, Lara. I’m already falling in love.”

Love? I didn’t want to say the scary word, but that’s what I’m feeling too. It’s like our bodies are connecting on a deeper level and our minds are trying to catch up. Even now, when I’m supposed to be taking a breather, I feel drawn to him. Pulled to him. I just want to crawl up against him and feel those big protective arms wrap around me.

“What’s your favorite dessert?”

I laugh. “What?”

“Your favorite dessert. The thing that really gets you going.”

“A warm brownie with vanilla ice cream.”

“Good,” he says.

“With hot chocolate sauce poured all over it.”

He laughs. “I’ll have to remember that for movie night.”

My cheeks hurt from smiling so hard. The thought of having a movie night with this man, curled up under a blanket with him, is making me all kinds of giddy.

“So, imagine you’re having a long day,” he goes on. “And you have a few opportunities to have a snack—some stale cookies you found in your pantry, maybe a donut that looks just okay, it’s not your favorite flavor. Or perhaps you think of stopping for a cinnamon bun, but they’re so heavy and always leave you with a stomach ache. You get where I’m going with this.”
