Adelaide stepped closer and wrapped her arms around my neck. “Whatever is or isn’t going on with Brody and Sutton, it’s for them to figure out. I want to focus on us and how we’re getting married soon.”
I wrapped my arms around her and pulled her tight to my body. “I love you so much. If we weren’t standing on these public docks, I’d have my way with you right now.”
Her cheeks turned a light shade of pink. “As fun as public sex sounds…”
I raised an intrigued brow, and Adelaide rolled her eyes and giggled. “Okay, so public sex doesn’t actually sound fun. I’m here because Sutton and Brody have planned a bachelor-slash-bachelorette party for us. A coed party, if you will, on Saturday night. Brody said he checked your schedule and you were off.”
“Yep, I am. What made them decide to do that? Make it a coed party?”
She grinned and looked at my lips, then back up to me. “I might have threatened them both and said I’d send in a false tip to the newspaper if they didn’t just have a normal, no-strippers-or-crazy-alcohol party. Plus, I don’t really want to have a bridal shower, so it’s kind of all three parties wrapped up into one—but without the strippers or the stupid shower games.”
I laughed. “You blackmailed them?”
“Yep, and I’m proud to say it worked like a charm.”
I glanced down the docks to the building where Brody worked as an underwater welder. Addie was right, we should just ignore whatever was going on between him and Sutton. But something was still eating away at me. And the more Brody said it was nothing, the more I believed it might be something big. “Do you think they’re having an affair? Like a secret one?” I asked.
Adelaide bit down on her lip and shook her head. “No, if Sutton was having sex, she wouldn’t be so damn uptight. I think they’re fighting their feelings for each other, and maybe that’s causing tension between them? But he’s still helping her around her house and at the store, so I’m not really sure.”
“I know I should do what you said and just let it go.”
“Palmer told me that when she walked into Coastal Chic the other day, she found the two of them in the storage room in the middle of a pretty heated moment. They weren’t making out or anything, but she said it almost seemed like they were arguing about something. She said the sexual tension in the room was so thick, she could have cut it with a knife. Then Jack showed up, and Brody left out the back door. Palmer said he looked pissed.”
“Jack? He’s back in town?”
She nodded. “Guess so.”
“Why was Jack there?”
“Don’t know. Palmer overheard him and Sutton talking about the store after Brody left. They were arguing, but she couldn’t really make out what they said other than Jack mentioning something about Sutton and Brody. She couldn’t hear exactly what it was.”
“Why would Jack even stop by the store? I thought he already sold his half to Sutton?”
Adelaide let out a long sigh. “He was supposed to. He left for France a while ago, and she’s been using her lawyer to communicate with him. He keeps giving her excuses about why he’s not selling yet. I think Sutton might have to take him back to court.”
“Are you kidding me?”
She shook her head. “I wish I was. She hasn’t told my parents because she’s worried it might upset our dad. But now it sounds like Jack’s back in town and still won’t sell.”
“Why not?”
She snarled her lip. “He’s an asshole.”
I laughed without much humor in it. “I can see why Sutton is keeping this from your parents.”
“Yeah, my dad would try to find Jack and kick his ass.”
“Makes me want to do the same thing. Do you think Brody knows what’s going on, and that’s why they were arguing?”
Adelaide shrugged. “Maybe? I don’t know. Anyway, I better let you get back to work. Please be careful, and I’ll see you after your shift is over?”
I leaned down and kissed her before resting my forehead on hers. “I’m always careful, sweetheart.”
“Saturday bachelor-bachelorette-shower combo good with you?”
“Good with me.” After giving her a slap on the ass, we parted. “I love you, future Mrs. Wilson,” I called out as she started to walk away.
She glanced at me over her shoulder, a brilliant smile on her face. “I love you more!”
She turned and headed down the docks toward the parking lot. I watched until she got in her car and drove off. Then I pulled out my phone and hit my brother’s name. I wasn’t sure if he was underwater right now or not.
“Hello?”
“Hey, what’s going with you?” I asked.
“I’m heading to Boston to work on a ship that needs some welding.”
