“Then I will walk you to him.”
And that was that. I got that by doing this, Agan’s father was telling his son he was okay with his choice of a woman to marry. Maybe I should have been offended. But honestly, I wanted peace. I’d lived without family, longing for my father. I would not be the woman to stand between Agan and his.
“I love him,” I said.
“I know. I should have loved his mother just as much.”
We walked and when I saw Agan tear up at the sight of his father, it was all worth it. Love is messy. But when you love every piece of someone, you can get through it.
Agan’s father remained true to his word. He handed me to my father. In the back row, my mother had tears in her eyes. I hadn’t seen her arrive and it was too late to ask her to leave since I hadn’t invited her. There was an unspoken apology in her expression. Maybe it was time for forgiveness on my part as well.
“She’s made mistakes,” my father whispered as the wedding march played in the background. “But what I’ve learned over the years is it hurts more to hold on to anger than it does to let go.”
We reached the end of the aisle. Mitchell stood, shocking me. He held a hand out to our daughter. Zoe stood and took my hand and Mitchell the other. This hadn’t been rehearsed. They stopped in front of Agan. Mitchell put my hand into Agan’s. Then Zoe said, “Do you promise to take good care of my mommy?”
The crowd laughed and when it quieted, Agan said, “Absolutely.”
“Then you can marry her,” she said, and lifted my hand to his other one.
The official said, “It’s not time to kiss the bride yet.”
“I beg to differ,” Agan said and kissed me soundly on the mouth. To me, he said, “Every piece of you belongs to every piece of me.”
“Darn right, Mr. Fancy Pants.”
A smirk formed on his beautiful mouth. I’d have to tell him that’s what I’d named him before I knew who he really was. For now, I was lost in the magic of the day.
I can’t say I remember much after that. Words were exchanged, sure, but my heart was full of love for the first time in my life. And everyone there played a role in that. Especially the man who held my hands like he would never let go.
The end…
