With a jerky nod, Jobe took in a deep breath and then another before carefully placing his fingertips against Jobe’s now stretched birthing skin. “Oh wow.” He pressed down, and after only a hint of resistance, his fingers penetrated Wesley’s body. “I’ve never felt anything like this.”
“Neither have I.” Wesley’s voice sounded strained to his own ears. The sensation wasn’t painful, but it definitely wasn’t comfortable. “Can you feel her?”
“Yes.” His gaze locked on Wesley’s stomach, Jobe crinkled his forehead in concentration. “Just a little more and I’ll have her.”
As promised, he slid his fingers in a bit farther and then Wesley felt a sharp pulling sensation. “Ah,” he said in surprise.
Jobe froze and flicked his gaze toward Wesley’s face. “Still okay?”
“Yes,” Wesley bit out. “Keep going.”
Jobe nodded, returned his focus to the birthing skin, and then, right before Wesley’s eyes, his mate pulled a pink, wriggling baby from his stomach.
“Oh.” Jobe gasped. “Oh look. She’s an angel.”
Almost immediately, the angel opened her mouth and let out a wail loud enough to shake the windows.
Jobe’s eyes widened in shock and then he beamed.
The jarring sound combined with his mate’s unadulterated joy, helpfully distracted Wesley from the painful sensation of his stomach spasming as the skin that had thinned enough to allow hands to reach through it now slowly weaved itself back into a solid form.
“Sounds like your angel has a healthy set of lungs, Alpha.” The doctor handed Jobe a blanket. “I’ll need to give her a proper examination, but I can wait a few minutes.”
“Thank you.” Jobe carefully set the baby on Wesley’s chest, away from his healing stomach, and draped the blanket over her.
Instinctively, Wesley reached up and placed his hand on his daughter’s back, covering her tiny body from one side to the other. Overcome with emotion, he jerked his gaze between his mate and the no longer crying beauty on his chest.
“Wes?” Jobe grabbed onto Wesley’s free hand.
Every moment of frustration and rejection Wesley had endured during his life for being different or less than whole melted away. “Look what we made,” he said, his voice full of awe.
His eyes shining with tears, Jobe leaned down and pressed their foreheads together. “Look what we made.”
