Five hundred bucks for that? It looks more like a prop than a real item of clothing, but Freddie stuffs it on his head once more, covering his long, lanky blonde locks. Of course, my buddy’s snazzy duds and noticeably sassy attitude always earn us a few glances on the course, but I don’t mind. I’ve never met someone as comfortable in their skin as Fred. The man is honestly a bit of a mystery to me, but he’s successful, come to think of it.

After all, Fred is co-owners with Bellarmine of the sex club. I have no idea how these two got into the business or how they even met, but they’ve been in business for a while now, and it seems to work.

“How’s Bell?” I ask. “I didn’t see her last weekend.”

My buddy shrugs before dropping his ball onto the fairway.

“A pain in my ass, as usual,” he says cheerfully. “Why?”

I shrug.

“Just wondering.”

Then, Freddie stands staring down the green for a hell of a long time, lining his shot up mentally. He finally swings, sending the ball in a pin straight line through the air, and I watch, amazed, as it flies over a sand pit and lands right under the hole. He’s going to finish under par. Again, damnit.

“Would you look at that, Clay! A beautiful shot, another beautiful shot. I really am having a day, aren’t I?”

“Yeah, you’re beating my ass,” I grunt.

“Oh, Clay my boy, never in public!” Fred jokes as he joins me by the cart. We clink beers before switching turns on the green. It takes me seven shots on a five-par hole, and I come back spitting epithets under my breath.

“There, there. It’s just a game!” Fred reminds me, waving a hand in the air to amplify his point. “Mellow, my dear Clay. The point of the game is to unwind, not wind up.”

Then, Fred begins to sashay around the golf cart, swaying his hips from side to side as both arms elevate loftily in the air. There is no music, but I can almost hear the tarantella playing silently in his ears. Da-ba-baba, Da-ba-baba, Da-dadadadada. He picks up his golf club and holding it horizontally across his chest before bopping it from right to left, his body following along. I should be embarrassed, but instead, I just laugh. My friend’s certifiably crazy, but everyone needs a friend like this.

“Come on Clay, get it into,” he calls out to me. I chuckle, but remain by the cart, sipping my beer as I watch the show. Well, at least Fred knows how to make me laugh, even if he’s beating my ass. But then I take another swig and change the subject.

“So how are things going at the club, Freddie my man? You seem to have a steady crowd on weekends.” He squints, looking off into the distance with a mischievous expression.

“Yes, yes. Things are quite wonderful. I’m no billionaire,” he states, stressing the syllable “bill.” “Yet I’m a millionaire and living the dream. But tsk tsk tsk,” he clicks his tongue at me, an impish grin on his face. “I have noticed you’ve been bringing a very pretty customer to my establishment lately. Is there something you would like to share with me, my dear friend?”

I chuckle. I suppose Fred would know, since he owns the place. After all, I’ve been bringing Kitty by on weekends, and I have to say she’s warming up to the finer sides of play parties. We haven’t done anything more than a bit of exhibitionism, but I can tell she likes it, and I’m anticipating the day when she asks for more.

“Yes, Kitty. You’ve met a few times now,” I respond nonchalantly. Fred grins.

“Of course. Such a sweet girl, which is so rare for you!” He sips his beer before continuing. “You’re usually into skanks, my man! Plus, I don’t think you’ve ever brought the same girl to my club twice.”

“What can I say, I like to keep things interesting,” I respond in a wry tone.

“Yes, but this Kitty character has passed the test of time already,” Fred remarks brightly. “What has it been? One month? Two?” I chuckle again.

“Well, it’s been a few months actually, but yeah, she’s pretty amazing.”

Freddie grins while getting into the golf cart.

“Why, I never thought I’d see the day. This is a good thing. A virtuous, idealistic young lady like that needs a strong character like you in her life to lead and teach her. You two are the perfect couple really. And a sweet, good girl like that will be a good change of pace for you, my friend.”

“Yeah, I could see us having a future together,” I admit. Fred nearly spits out his beer.

“A future together? Clay Towning, I never thought I’d see the day! You’ve fallen in love, my sweet boy.” He tousles my hair endearingly the way you would your five-year-old nephew. “Do I hear wedding bells?”
