As I sang, teasing and involving the crowd, I could feel Dane’s eyes on me—his eyes were always on me—and obviously, I fucking loved it.
I loved him, and he loved me. Go us! I still couldn’t believe it, that we had begun by disliking each other for no real reason, and now we were in this place, in love and just having gotten a new apartment. Tonight would be our first night there together, and I couldn’t wait. I totally wanted to live with Dane, but I was also a little worried about Seth. It was one of the reasons we’d taken six months to get here; well, that, and Dane was being all logical about not rushing, which I loved about him but pretended I didn’t.
When the song was over, the crowd went wild. I bowed, before saying, “Thank you,” into the mic. “And give it up for Seth on the piano. Isn’t he precious? He’s my bestie, and I love him.”
Seth blushed, smiled, and waved at everyone.
Slowly, I headed toward the bar with a grin on my face. “And of course, my gorgeous boyfriend, who makes the best drinks ever. And, well, he’s also really good at—”
“Jesse!” Dane shouted, cutting me off and making everyone laugh.
“Oops. Did I almost say too much again?” I teased. He rolled his eyes but had a smile on his face. It still amazed me that I had the ability to make him smile, that I made him happy. It was my favorite thing to do.
“Get over here,” he said. I finished the trek across the bar, leaned over the counter, and kissed him quickly.
“We got our first apartment! Yay!” I said into the mic. “I have a habit of oversharing.”
“No, you?” one of the patrons asked, and I heard Dane chuckle behind me.
It had been a bit of a whirlwind six months. Even though we hadn’t moved in together officially until today, Dane and I had spent most of it together, staying at Seth’s place or at Bree’s.
He’d met my parents twice, and while it was still a work in progress, they were trying. They invited him into their home, and asked about him when we spoke on the phone, and called him my boyfriend. I still knew it wasn’t their dream for me, but they loved me, and that was what mattered. We were getting there.
Benji was working the farm full-time with my dad. One day he would inherit it, and we were all okay with that. I admit, I did get a little jealous sometimes, seeing him and my dad together. They looked much more like father and son than we did, but then, my dad had told me my makeup looked nice the last time I was there, told me how proud he was of me for school, and that had felt so damn good.
They’d even helped me get a vehicle; it was used, vintage, and I loved it.
We finished up our work for the night, and then Seth, Dane, and I walked out together.
“I can’t believe we don’t live together anymore,” Seth said.
“I know. Same. But you call me if you need me, okay? Anytime.” I hugged him and kissed his cheek.
“I know, Jess, but I’m good.”
He and Dane hugged next, and then Seth went to his car and we went to mine.
We drove to our apartment in silence, I think both of us a bit overwhelmed that it was all happening.
The door stuck a little when we unlocked it, which made us chuckle. “Well…it isn’t the best,” Dane said.
“It’s a bit crappy.”
“Yeah, but it’s our crappy place,” he said, closing and locking the door. “I love you.”
I wrapped my arms around him and hugged him. “I love you too. Now which room do you want to fuck me in first?” I teased, earning myself another laugh.
He was right. It was ours, and that was all that mattered. It might not be everyone’s dream come true, but it was pretty perfect if you asked me.
