Even better, Randall has been incredibly supportive of my career. I stopped working as a paralegal because Willy Disdale grew to be too noxious. I could no longer stand his attentions, and with Randall supporting us, I no longer needed a salary either. Now, I attend a local law school and I’m studying my ass off to be the best attorney I can.
Once everyone has finished singing happy birthday to our little girl, I smile at Dottie. “Blow out your candles, honey! Three… Two… One!”
She blows with all of her might, but it doesn’t go too well, and Randall and I lean in to help her extinguish the flames completely. She claps her hands and yells, “Cake! Cake!”
“Okay, okay,” I reply soothingly. “No shouting, even if it’s your birthday. I’ll get you some cake, baby.”
As I reach for the knife, Petra raises her eyebrows and bites her lip, pointing behind me instead of helping me with the cake. She’s mouthing something at me while spinning her finger in circles, but I can’t make out what she’s trying to say.
“What?” I ask in confusion. “I can’t hear you. What is it?”
But Petra merely gestures at me furiously, still waving her hands.
I furrow my brows in confusion and finally turn around, only to have my heart drop to my feet. It’s my gorgeous boyfriend on one knee, an open ring box in his hand. The teardrop shaped diamond is gorgeous, sparkling under the lights with intense fire.
I cover my mouth in happy shock as Randall begins his proposal.
“Olivia,” he starts, his blue eyes like lasers. “You are the most beautiful woman I’ve ever laid eyes on and the most wonderful mother to our daughter. Without you in my life, it would be devoid of color, life, laughter, and love. You are my everything, my entire world, the center of my life, and the other half of my heart. Olivia Castor, will you marry me? Will you do me the honor of becoming Mrs. Randall Monroe?”
With tears in my eyes, I hardly speak at first, but then Petra elbows me in the side and I laugh happily. “Of course. Yes. Yes!”
Randall’s face lights up with joy as he reaches into the box to pull out the beautiful ring I know I’ll never take off. He slides the diamond onto my finger and embraces me as everyone applauds and cheers for us. Then, he lifts me off of my feet and twirls me around in circles until I’m dizzy, laughing and even panting a bit. He leans in for a kiss, but I pull away slightly as he looks at me with confusion.
“What is it, sweetheart? Why so serious on this happy day?”
I merely smile mysteriously.
“I have to tell you something,” I tell him, my voice low as applause and cheers roar in the background.
“Yes?”
I bite my lip and smile at him. “I’m pregnant again. You’re going to be a daddy to baby number two.”
Randall’s eyes go wide and he nearly erupts with happiness. Then he picks me up and swings me around once more, his huge arms strong and firm around my waist.
“Did you hear that, everyone? I’m going to be a father again! Thanks to this beautiful woman!”
I giggle as he sets me down to much applause and congratulations. After all, I have a good man, and I’m over the moon myself with the prospect of a second baby with him.
“You make me so happy,” Randall murmurs as he seizes my mouth in a loving kiss. “You complete me, Olivia. You, Dottie, and the new baby on the way.”
And with that, the doctor’s pledge of adoration is complete.
