“In her typically MO, thinks only about herself. Waltzes her way into my space in a way she knows I can’t cause a scene. Doing it again last night. Stupid bitch wants me back, thinks moving here with her fancy job proves something.”
“Brother, you gotta—“ Ford tries, but I cut him off.
“Then I have a woman who has a wild streak. She and her band of misfits go sleuthing, which leads them directly to her. Do you know what would have happened if Darla would have spotted them last night? She’s delusional enough to think her pussy still has power over me. No telling what she would have done, but chances are she would have loved fucking with Jewls’ head.”
Their expressions are mirrored with equal hatred and repulsion.
“Now I have to navigate getting that bitch out of my life again and make sure it doesn’t touch Jewls. Normal women would take my rejection and slink away, but not Darla. She sees it as a damn challenge, which means my ass has to be on alert. That is something I do not need at this stage while making a new life with a good woman.”
“We got this.” Talon squares his shoulders. “You aren’t dealing with her crazy on your own.”
“Appreciate it, but it’s not your problem.”
“Jewls is one of us. Plus, if it fucks with her, it fucks with Harley. That shit will not fly,” Ace spits out with venom.
“I’m grateful, but I can take care of myself.”
All heads swing to find Jewls standing at the foot of the hall. She’s wearing an old, ratty USMC shirt that swallows her frame. My eyes go to the small little marks left by my fingers on the inside of her thighs. Thoughts of yesterday replay in my mind, making my dick stir.
“Where’d you find that shirt?”
She instantly snaps back to attention. “Don’t change the subject.”
Her attitude only adds to my swelling cock. “Come here.”
“No.”
“Come here or I’m coming to you.”
“No, you are staying right there while we discuss this. I get you’re all alpha macho, overprotective badasses, but I’m stronger than you give me credit for. My job often takes me to the depths of hell and brings me into contact with whack jobs. I’m used to crazy; crazy doesn’t faze me.”
“I get that, babe, but two minutes into meeting her and she fucked with your head.”
“No, no, no. I’ll admit she caught me off guard. To my credit, she ambushed me on the way to find a…” she stutters over her word, splotches filling her cheeks, “the restroom. And told me she was your ex-fiancée. That was not what I expected. You don’t get to have a hero complex based on that.” Her hands go to her hips, the shirt rising enough the marks are now fully visible.
A chorus of throats clear, and her forehead crinkles, unaware of what they see.
“Jewls, drop your hands.”
She looks down and immediately releases her hips, her face fully flushed. “Damn you, Major!”
Note to self, she’s even more adorable when she’s flustered. “I’m not the one who pranced out here in nothing but a t-shirt.”
“This is the last time I’m staying here without you.”
“When Ace is out, and the room is sanitized, you’ll be in my bed every night.”
“Dammit,” Talon mutters while Ace and Ford chuckle.
“And for what it’s worth, with this system, I can control the lock on those doors. You girls feel like bringing the sprockets out of retirement, I’ll know.”
She stomps, firing lasers in my direction. “We are not talking about that.”
All night, I fought to control the anger of her sneaking around and digging up information on Darla. But now, that anger simpers down and twists into enjoyment. By the sound of the chuckles, the others agree.
“This is not funny!” She slices her eyes between the guys.
“Like I said, you make life entertaining,” Talon replies. “Especially the part when you and Jay wrestle while shrieking like banshees.”
“Bed. I’m going to bed. It’s too early, and I haven’t had enough sleep to straighten you all out.”
“Be there in a minute,” I tell her.
“I’m sleeping in the guest room.”
“Try it, see what happens.”
“Nothing is going to happen, because I’m locking you out!” she calls over her shoulder.
“Life will always be interesting with that one.” Talon hums a little tune.
“Interesting is one thing, irresponsible is another.”
“It’ll be fun watching how she keeps you on your toes.”
“Are you quoting my mom now?”
“She’s a wise, wise woman.” He steeples his hands and bows in jest.
My lips twitch at his gesture. “Smart ass.”
“Smarter than you if you don’t get to your room before your woman makes good on her promise.”
I snatch the bottle of water and head down the hall. Part of me hopes Jewls does try to sleep in a guest room. Because then I won’t feel bad when she can’t walk tomorrow.
