Beckett looks mildly mortified. “How the fuck did you get them down your throat?”

I shudder remembering. “I made them into a bunch of tiny little packages, enough that I could swallow them. Then they were wrapped in this latex type material. After a bit of practice, it was easy enough to swallow them.”

“Fuck that,” Beckett murmurs. “That’s the worst thing I’ve ever heard.”

“You’re telling me. I was the one who had to fish them out after.”

He scrunches up his face and I laugh. “Your face right now.”

His mouth twitches. “Well, you certainly have lived an interesting life, Pop-Tart.”

I roll my eyes. “Thanks for getting the rats out, Captain. Night.”

He holds my gaze for a moment. “Night.”

And, that right there, I think was the best conversation I’ve ever had with Beckett.

Maybe things won’t be so bad after all.

“WE’VE GOT A PROBLEM, brother,” Hugh says, walking into the warehouse the next day as Beckett and I are busy making money as fast as we can to get this over and done with.

Beckett looks up. “What’s the problem?”

Hugh points to me. “Her man is here, and he ain’t leavin’. Got about ten guys.”

I blink, shaking my head in confusion. My man?

“Mateo?” I question.

“The one and only,” Hugh grunts. “You want to deal with him?”

I glance at Beckett who shakes his head with an angry expression.

“I’ll sort this out,” I say, wiping my hands and walking outside with Beckett and Hugh on my tail.

At the fence stands Mateo with a whole lot of armed people behind him. His eyes flash when he sees me, and I know he’s pissed. God, he’ll be so angry. I tried to sell him out, and that will not have gone down well.

“Mateo,” I say, stopping at the fence. “What are you doing here? How did you find me?”

“I tracked your phone,” he informs me, without so much as a hiccup. “We need to talk.”

God.

My phone.

If Mateo tracked it ... Rocco could, too.

Shit.

Beckett looks like he’s just realized this, too. He pulls his phone out to make a call.

“Look, I know you’re pissed that I tried to sell you out but ...”

“I don’t fuckin’ care about that,” Mateo goes on. “You think someone like you can trick someone like me? Come on, sweetheart. I’m way ahead of you.”

Oh.

“You knew I was going to do that?”

Mateo smirks. “I knew you would if you had to.”

“If that’s not why you’re here, then ...”

“Your boy Rocco is after me, but more so, he’s after you. He’s pissed and he’s got a lot of bad people behind him, the kind of people you don’t have enough manpower to deal with.”

“Yes, I know,” I say. “I have a plan.”

“The cop?” Mateo grins. “Bad plan.”

I stare at him, wide eyed. “You know about Dane?”

“Dane has been after the bad guys around here for a long fuckin’ time, he’s old news. He will help you, but do you honestly think he’ll just walk away when it’s done?”

“Yes, actually,” I say, crossing my arms. “I do because he seems like a good guy.”

“You’re wrong, he won’t back off. He’ll come after your little club here as soon as he gets the chance.”

“Maybe so, but he hasn’t touched them before, he won’t now. They’re always going to have cops after them, but right now he’s the only way I can get Rocco off my back.”

Mateo glances at Beckett who is now standing beside me again. “I know another way.”

I give Beckett a look, and then meet my husband’s eyes once more. “What way would that be?”

“We kill him and his second in charge,” Mateo says, as if it’s a simple solution.

Beckett shakes his head. “Not a good plan, you kill two, then the whole fuckin’ group will be after you. Surely you’re smart enough to know how a cartel runs?”

Mateo’s eyes flash and he leans toward the fence. “Watch it, biker. I’m not past bringing you down, too.”

“Fuckin’ try it.” Beckett bares his teeth in a snarl.

“Okay, okay, calm down testosterone,” I say, putting my hands up. “Beckett is right, Mateo. Killing two people isn’t going to get rid of the rest of them.”

“You didn’t let me finish.” Mateo grins. “It does if they don’t think it was any of us that killed them.”

I blink, slowly. “Go on.”

“Know some guys who owe me big, they want to get out of shit with me and they’re willin’ to do it. They know full well what it means for them, but they don’t get a great deal of choice. They do the job, it gets Rocco away from you and the cartel fixed on someone else. It also keeps the fuckin’ cop away. Win win.”

Beckett glances at me. “It’s a good plan.”

“Oh, you’re agreeing with him now?” I mutter.

“I’m just sayin’, it makes sense. If he’s got someone dumb enough to take out the top two of this gang then I’d let them do it. He’s right, Rocco goes and you’re cleared, they’ll have their focus on far bigger things.”
