“You can’t do either.” I slide my hand beneath the sheet. I’m met with soft skin. It also does the trick because where she’s been warm and under the sheets, my hand is cool to the touch.

“Theo Goldman, I’m going to murder you.” She flops onto her back, tucking the comforter with her, obscuring her bare body from my view. “I’m awake now, and you’re a cruel, cruel man.”

“If you murder me, who will give you the orgasms you crave?” I tease her, moving until I’m on top of her, boxing her in with my forearms on either side of her head. Her face is still soft from sleep, eyes glassy, and lips still plump from my mouth on hers throughout the night.

“Bob. He worked before you. I’ll use him again.” Her quick-witted response before caffeine is uncanny.

“Is that so? I guess you won’t need this again?” I dip my hips. Her legs open for me through the sheets, and with her sharp intake of breath, Danica’s body tells me what her voice doesn’t.

“Come on, sleepy head, I’ll make you a cup of coffee while you get out of bed.” My lips graze hers twice before I finally move away from her. I swear she’s like oxygen to my lungs—it’s impossible to breathe without her nearby.

“Fine, but I want breakfast, too.” She pouts her lips as she sits up in bed, still not getting out.

“Demanding little fairy this morning,” I reply. I’ll more than likely have to come back in here to wake her up again. She is taking to working in the office and at home better than expected. It also means she’s able to keep a normal schedule and sleep until eight or nine o’clock. When she was working before, she was up at six after only getting into bed at midnight, sometimes one.

“Bagel and cream cheese, please.” Not an ounce of protein for breakfast. The woman runs on caffeine, cheese, and carbs.

“Get your ass moving, or it won’t happen.” She huffs out an exaggerated puff of air, but I don’t stick around. If I did, neither of us would be leaving the bedroom for the foreseeable future.

“Don’t forget the extra cream cheese!” she calls out behind my back. I shake my head. One day, she’ll eat an omelet with some vegetables, but until then, it looks like I’m going to buy stock in cream cheese. It doesn’t take me long to get to the kitchen. The coffee brewer is already on from making my own while Sylvester was on the other end of the line. Instead of us all heading into the office, we settled on a conference call as he laid out what wasn’t hard to uncover. EverTrust is so in the red, there’s no way we’d have touched it in order to turn it around. The associates Charles spoke about within his own company, they weren’t much better, funneling money in and out of EverTrust, laundering whatever they could without getting caught. Shit is going to come crashing down in the next day or so. It’s time I prepare Danica for the fall.

I throw a pod in the one-cup brewing system—caramel flavor—and put her preferred coffee mug she gravitates to on the daily. Then grab the creamer out of the fridge along with the cream cheese, setting it on the counter, and only when I’m working on toasting her bagel does she grace me with her presence.

“I take it back. I’m not going to murder you,” she says, wearing my shirt from yesterday, hair in a messy bun and voice thick with sleep.

“It’s my impeccable demeanor, isn’t it?”

“Yeah, right. Dragging me out bed this early, I’m going with orgasms and that you can cook.” She adds her sugar while I push the bagel down in the toaster.

“Fairy, we both know it’s the full fucking package.” I wrap my arms around her from behind as she takes a sip of her coffee. “Fucking sucks I’ve got to ruin our morning, but Sylvester is finding a wealth of information, and I want to prepare you.” It seems like there’s always some kind of corruption whenever there’s money involved. I’m not saying taking a life is a good thing, but my moral compass is fucking skewered when it comes to Danica. There are men who deserve to die and men who deserve to rot in prison. Prison was too good for Brian. Air to breathe was too great a gift for the likes of him. As for Charles, taking away his money, a free life, and being known as an abuser, well, that’s a whole other story.

“Okay, let’s do this.” She turns around, and I lift her up until she’s sitting on the countertop. “Man, my ass always takes the brunt of you picking me up,” she jokes.

“Make your bagel while I talk.” The bagel pops up, and I plop it on a plate, grab the knife and cream cheese, then slide it on the counter nearest to her thigh.
