See? Knew better.
I click back to the selfie and focus on those upturned lips, my eyes going half-mast as my vivid imagination paints a picture of those lips coming closer as he leans down to press them against mine.
“But a romantic one,” I whisper. “Maybe I could handle his sadism. He’s Gym Daddy, after all.”
Without much more thought, before my voices can start up with why I shouldn’t, I click the heart next to his name.
And then the panic sets in as if that button was its On switch.
“Oh, God. What the fuck was I thinking?” I shout at Kronk, who has absolutely no words of consolation. In fact, he has no reaction whatsoever. He doesn’t even blink. “Can I take it back? Can I find him on the app and undo the heart thingy?”
I hop on my laptop and open Google, then type in the question my cat has no answer for, finding there’s no way to go back to Gym Daddy’s profile. Apparently, once you either choose the minus sign or the heart, it takes that profile out of the list of ones they show you. They suggest only swiping through the people instead of choosing one of the buttons unless you know for sure whether or not you’d want them to have the ability to message you.
“But!” I turn my face more toward my lazy feline but keep my eyes on the screen to read aloud, “‘They don’t know you hearted their profile until they heart yours.’ So that means he’ll never know I marked him with a big ole YES! stamp, because he’d have to do the same to me while he’s swiping through people on the app. And there ain’t no way that man will give this chick a second glance. Hell, he wouldn’t just swipe past me. He’d straight-up click the minus sign.”
The thought is both depressing and a relief.
But that thought isn’t able to go any further nor spin out of control, because my phone makes a sound I’ve never heard from it before.
When I look down at my phone in my lap, I can’t believe my fucking eyes yet again.
You’ve made a match!
I click on the notification, even though I know who the match I’ve made is, seeing as he’s literally the only person I’ve hearted on the entire app.
Congratulations! RomanticSadist sent you a heart! Since you previously sent them one, that means your ability to message each other has been unlocked. You’ve taken the first step, now go for it! Start up a conversation now by clicking here.
Before I even have a chance to click on the little envelope icon, it turns red with a numeral 1 in the middle of it.
“I’m gonna pass out,” I wheeze, blinking to make the world stop spinning so I can see the message I just opened.
RomanticSadist: VERY cool that you’re an author! So just research? Or more?
WillDive4Plants: Oh holy hell…
“Fuck!” I bark, not meaning to type that out and send it to him. It was supposed to
either be just a thought or spoken aloud to Kronk—both those options to be met with the same response: Silence.
“Think, Sienna. Think, think, think,” I tell myself, needing to focus on what to tell this man before he has a chance to read that as my only reply to his message. A message that makes me smile even as I panic.
Of course Gym Daddy wouldn’t initiate a first conversation like all the douches who have contacted me. No “Hey.” No “Pic for pic?” No “Are those real?” And most definitely not an empty message with only a dick pic attached.
His message means he actually read my profile.
His message means he read past my occupation to see I was on the app for research.
His message means that, although he saw I said I’m only on here for research, he knows I’m interested in him, seeing as he could only gain the ability to message me if I hearted his profile in the first place. Therefore, the “Or more?” part of his question is forgivable.
The real question now, though, becomes… do I tell him I know who he is? I mean, no, I don’t know who he is, but I’ve seen him in real life before. I know he has a membership to the same gym as me, so if he wants to stay incognito on this app like so many of the other guys did on the dating sites, then I run the risk of him blocking me from Go if he knows I could easily approach him in person at any time.
But as I swipe back to see his photo, that pleasantly relaxed face, and having seen his friendly demeanor with anyone who talks to him at the gym, something in me tells me I should be completely honest with him. Something tells me there’s no need to ever lie to this man, not even by omission. So I take a deep breath, close my eyes to line up my words, then begin to type, letting my real personality out, because why the hell not.
