“If he knew the shit you’ve been up to for years, he probably would have finished it,” Corinne says and cackles at her own words.
“Well, he doesn’t know, now does he?”
“For now. Which brings me back to what I came here for. Where’s my money?”
I stop pacing and whirl around to glare at her. I’m so sick of this shit. She’s too stupid to see I never planned to pay her in the first place.
“I ain’t got it. What you gonna do? Take the baby back? She’s eighteen. What’s done is done,” I seethe.
“Donna. Don’t make me do this.”
“Do what? Tell Cliff you stole his sperm and used a turkey baster to impregnant me? Guess what, I don’t give a shit. The marriage is over, I got nothing.
“That asshole I sent to her couldn’t even rape her and fuck her up in the head so she wouldn’t make it big or want to come back to Trevor. You all failed me.
“That coward couldn’t even face me or tell me he failed. He just up and disappeared,” I blurt the words out before I can think better of it.
I’m losing it all, and it’s all that singing Black bitch’s fault. Why couldn’t she stay the fuck away? She’s just like that cunt my father married. They never stay away.
“You did what?” Corinne breathes incredulously.
“You heard me. I’m not repeating myself. I knew that letter wasn’t enough. I was right. She called, and I knew I had to do something. I called in an old favor. Some good that did me.”
“You’re fucking crazy. The baby was one thing. Girls our age were doing that all the time to trap high profile guys. But this … Donna, tell me you’re joking.”
“Corinne those girls were stealing condoms from guys they slept with. Not drunk guys they jerked off passed out in the back of their trucks. Don’t give me that bullshit as if you’re so fucking innocent,” I snarl back.
“You keep that money. You’re going to need it to buy your way out of hell. I’m sorry I ever helped you trick that man.
“I was young and stupid and have regretted it every day since. Maybe my current situation is karma for what I’ve done. You get off on hurting people all to live beyond your means like your entitled to something.
“You’ve looked down on me like some poor white trash for the last time. I hope you get everything coming for you. And another thing. If you’re not going to care about him, leave Collen alone. He doesn’t need to become toxic like you,” she hisses as she grabs her things and then storms out.
“Good riddance,” I call after her.
I look at the TV she never cut off and mock the man on the screen. “I Stand with Trevor Monroe. Well, fuck you and Trevor Monroe.”
CHAPTER 25
Together
Lynn
“Everything okay?” I ask as Trevor saunter into the bedroom holding a tray, his sweatpants hanging low on his hips.
“Yeah, finally got them to go to bed. I think Scoot has a crush on you.”
I chuckle at that. I’d showered and gotten ready for bed while Trevor has been spending time with the kids. Snacks decided she wanted to spend the night as well. After dinner I learned why Toby got the nickname Scoot.
We were all sitting on the couch watching TV, and inch by inch, he kept scooting closer to me until he was right under me. Jess said he’s always been like that with people he likes.
I didn’t mind. I thought it was cute. I enjoy hanging out with the kids. They are all so smart and well mannered.
That Snacks is a little Nanna. I swear she’s picked up most of Nanna’s mannerisms. I was waiting for Nanna to jump out of Paige’s body.
“What’s that?” I ask as he walks over to the other side of the bed and puts the tray down.
“I made us some hot chocolate to go with our sad-looking cupcakes.”
“Ugh, you really have room for more food? God, that little baby can cook her tail off. I have only dreamed of cooking just like Nanna. That little girl has mastered it.”
I roll over on my other side to face him. I love how comfortable this feels, like something we do every night. He sits with his back to the headboard. I move closer and place my head in his lap.
“She’s gotten better. She started cooking for everyone back in the fall. I didn’t know she was that good until she put me out the kitchen on Thanksgiving.
“Every dish we took to the ranch was scraped clean. To be honest, I think Cliff hid some of it and just gave us back the cookware.”
He places a hand on my back and begins to rub soothing circles. I sigh and wrap my arms and legs around his strong thigh.
