Not letting up, she began fighting me again, but I was at my wits’ end with her to begin with.
“Calm down,” I ordered, blocking her attacks.
“Calm down?! You want me to calm down?! You killed my boyfriend, you fucking asshole! I loved him, and he’s the only man who’s ever loved me!”
“That’s it!” I loudly growled. “I’m over this shit!” I stood, dragging her with me.
“Jace, don’t you—”
I threw her over my shoulder, carrying her back to the bedroom of the safe house we were in.
She kicked and screamed the whole way, putting up one hell of a fight. However, I didn’t expect anything less from her at this point.
“Jace! Put me down!”
I did, slamming her ass onto the bed. Before she could give me more shit, I grabbed the handcuffs from my back pocket, cuffing one of her wrists to the iron rod on the headboard.
She jerked back when she realized what I just did.
“No!” Yanking her hand back, she tried to break free.
“Stop, or you’re going to hurt yourself.”
She glared at me. “Not any more than you already have!”
Inhaling a deep breath, I desperately tried to keep my cool although I was on the brink of insanity when it came to her.
“What the hell is going on?!”
“The less you know, the better.”
“What kind of bullshit response is that?”
“The only one I’m giving you.”
We were at a standoff for a moment before I opened the curtains, letting some natural light in. Once she noticed we were on a secluded island, her eyebrows pinched together.
“Where am I?”
“Where I want you to be.”
“Which is where?”
Grabbing the armchair, I slid it beside her and sat down. Leaning forward, I set my elbows on my knees, contemplating what I would say to her next.
Her long blond hair flowed all around her face and down the sides of her body. Her complexion was pale, and her pouty lips were dry from dehydration. Taking her in for a second, I nodded to the glass of water on the nightstand.
In true Cove rebellion, she knocked it off with the back of her hand, and it crashed at my feet, shattering to the floor all around me.
“Bunny…” I warned in a tense tone.
“Don’t bunny me, asshole! Why would you keep scaring me like this if it was you all along under that ski mask?”
“I was trying to make it easier on you by seeing me as the bad guy and not your fucking hero.”
“I was only saying that because—”
“No need to bullshit me. I know why you were.”
“Oh, that’s right! I forgot you know everything about me.”
“You think this is easy for me, Cove? You’re my little sister’s best fucking friend!”
She quickly grimaced. “You were never going to show me your face?”
“I was, on my time, not yours, but you made it completely fucking impossible for me not to reveal myself!”
“Don’t yell at me! How about you think for one minute what I’m going through, you selfish son of a bitch?!”
I growled as my hands fisted at my sides. “All I’ve done is think about you. If I hadn’t, you’d be dead already!”
I spent the past few hours sitting in this goddamn chair, waiting for her to wake up. After I chloroformed her, I carried her body back to my vehicle and drove us the hell out of there while making sure nobody followed us. About an hour later, she was lying on the seat in the back of a private jet I was flying for the next seven hours with only one stop to refuel.
I had to inject her with a powerful sedative to keep her asleep the entire time, but I didn’t leave her side for a second. By the time we got back to this safe house in the middle of nowhere, I laid her in the tub.
I fucking hated seeing that motherfucker’s blood and remnants of his brain and skull tainting her skin. Gently, I wiped off his dried blood from her face and body, cutting off her bra and panties with my knife next, exposing her bare flesh. I bathed her as best I could, given our shitty circumstances.
After I cleaned her up, I grabbed my shirt and boxers from my bag and dressed her in them. She drowned in my clothes. As I carried her to the bed, she didn’t stir once, and we hadn’t moved since. I watched her all night, waiting for her to wake up. I was used to not sleeping. Surviving on only an hour or two for weeks at a time was how I operated.
“Are you just going to sit there and be all you?” She gestured her hand toward me, working it up and down.
“This is how it’s going to go down, bunny. You’re not going to ask any more questions—”
“The hell I’m not!”
“If you interrupt me one more fucking time, I’ll gag you. Do you understand me? Nod your pretty little head if you do.”
