I placed a kiss on her temple and went back to the bunkhouse. I returned with blankets.
“There is an infrared radiant heater up in the loft as well,” I said, pointing to the one Dad had turned on for the mustang. “The blankets are more for padding.”
“The vet will be here any time,” she said.
“And he will need to examine them both. Come. We will hear him when he gets here.”
We took the back stairs up to a room for anyone who needed to stay with the animals overnight. I flicked a switch and lights illuminated the small room. A bed with a dusty mattress was still there. I covered it with the blankets I’d brought. Sunshine sat but didn’t lie down. I took a seat next to her.
“I can’t relax knowing—”
I cut her off, tipping her head at the right angle for a kiss. She didn’t push me away, just wrapped her arms around me and held tight. I eased her back and tucked her into my side. “We’ll figure this out… together. No running.”
Though I had no intention of taking things to the next level, she leaned up and kissed me. Our passion ignited like a fireball. Then we were all hands and mouths, tugging at clothes until our skin was bare and our bodies mingled. I was buried deep inside her when we heard Dad’s voice along with another. The vet was here.
We stilled, me midstroke, my cock strung tight as a bow ready to release. Her ragged breaths fanned my hair as we waited.
“What do you think?” Dad asked.
“On the surface, they look healthy. Let me get a closer look.”
The whinnies the mustang let out made it clear she wasn’t letting anyone get close.
“I have to go,” Sunshine murmured as she moved to get up.
I pulled her back, and it was enough to make her inner walls clamp down on my cock in a vise grip, enough that my dick jerked and shot off all my seed. I covered her moan with a long kiss. When we both settled, we scrambled for our clothes and got dressed.
Dad eyed me when we appeared from the back of the barn. Sunshine rushed forward to calm the mustang she hadn’t named yet. But anyone could see the horse was hers.
The vet watched in amazement as the mustang calmed enough that the vet got a look at her. The foal was another story. He was more interested in nursing.
“They both look good. Are you going to tame the mustang?” the vet asked.
“No,” Sunshine and I both said.
“We’re going to let her roam free, but we want registration papers for both to protect them.”
“I can get the paperwork going,” the vet said. We shook hands, and I walked him out. He explained the process, and we discussed where he should send the bill.
After he left, Dad was there. “You do good by the girl, or you’ll deal with me.”
He was serious. “I plan to, and there’s something else you should know.” I explained what happened on the mountain. When he looked as pissed off as I felt, I told him I’d already gotten Aiden involved.
“So that’s why she wanted to leave?” he asked, and I nodded.
He promised to keep a lookout as I went back to find Sunshine. She was leaning on the stall across from her mustang.
“The vet said they are good, so you can let go of that guilt. He’ll get the paperwork in, and we’ll be able to protect them.” I wrapped one arm around her as we stood there.
“I can’t thank you enough for everything.”
Chuckling, I said, “I can think of many ways you can thank me.”
She playfully slapped my arm. “Will you stay here while I go grab a shower?”
“You had me at ‘shower,’” I said and winked at her.
She pointed her finger at me. “Alone. I’ll be back.”
The things you would do for a woman when you were falling hard like a ton of bricks. If she told me to stand there and solider over the pair all day and night, I would be her Tin Man. I tipped my head in reply and watched her fine ass sway as she walked out of the barn. Damn, I was sunk.
As I waited for her return, I made a call to find out the latest about the search for Haley. I’d gotten messages about what they were doing, but wanted to speak to the team leader. They’d narrowed down where the beacon was coming from and were heading in that direction. I was cautioned that they might end up only finding the beacon. I prayed they found Haley. Otherwise, I might have to give my daughter very bad news.
My next call was to Gunner. “Hey. Are you ready to pull the trigger?” I’d sent him a draft agreement for custody and divorce. He hadn’t responded.
