He fired his gun at the same time as The Scot fired his. She put her hands over her ears, whimpering. She felt like a wimp, but this was so far out of her comfort zone.

“Hold on!” Cairn yelled and Alejandro ducked down, raising the window. It was then that she realized they had to be bulletproof.

Idiot.

Cairn turned the car sharply to the left, then to the right, coming to a stop.

“Out your side, keep low,” Alejandro ordered her.

She turned, fumbling with the door. It opened and she tumbled out, keeping down. Alejandro climbed out next to her.

“Keep down, Pequeña,” he said harshly as he crouched on one side of her. Cairn was on her other side. She hadn’t even realized that he’d left the car. The Scot was next to Cairn. They were all firing over the top of the vehicle.

She felt so helpless. So terrified.

She put her hands over her ears, certain she was going to die. That they were all going to die.

“Fuck! Running low on ammo!” The Scot called out.

Okay, that was something she could do to help. Crawling around, she slid into the car, careful to keep her head down.

How much ammo did the other guys have? She didn’t dare to look up out the window to see how many people were firing at them. It sounded like hundreds of bullets going back and forth.

“Cat!” Alejandro yelled.

“I’m staying down. I’m staying down.”

She grabbed two boxes of ammo and crawled back out, opening one with shaky hands. She handed over a cartridge to The Scot, then Cairn when he held his hand out. Alejandro crouched down and grabbed some. “Do not move again.”

He started shooting again. Nausea bubbled in her stomach. How much longer could they hold out? The car had to be suffering some damage. What if they hit the gas tank? Would it explode? Did that actually happen?

“We need to get into the warehouse,” The Scot said. Then he suddenly shouted and fell backward. She cried out in shock, moving over to him. He reached up a shaking hand to touch his shoulder.

“Fuck, lassie. Been shot.”

“Just stay still. I have you.” She drew off her sweater—the one that had probably cost more than her rent for a week—and placed it against his shoulder.

“How bad?” Alejandro asked.

“He’s been shot! It’s bleeding.”

Fuck. Of course it’s bleeding. Idiot.

He was pale, and in shock. Sweat had broken out across his forehead.

“Lass, I need you to do something for me . . . if I die—”

“You’re not dying, now shut up!” she told him.

“Wow. You have a t-terrible bedside m-manner!”

“Yes, I do. I’m a real bitch. And you’re not dying, so shut the fuck up.”

There was a screeching noise. The sound of more cars arriving. Oh God! Was it backup for the guys shooting at them?

“Cavalry,” Cairn called out.

She breathed a sigh of relief as she heard people yelling and more shots being fired.

She glanced down at The Scot again.

Mierda!

He was slipping into unconsciousness.

“Wake up! Hey, don’t go to sleep!” She shook his good shoulder. “Oye, estúpido!”

“Hey, don’t be so mean,” he mumbled. “Not nice.”

“Well, I am mean. So you better do as I say and stay awake if you don’t want me to get meaner.”

“Little Queen. So mean. Gotta respect that.”

Lord, he was delirious.

Someone touched her shoulder and she screamed, throwing herself over The Scot to protect him.

“Hey, Preciosa, soy yo. It’s all right.”

She glanced up at Alejandro. He stared down at her with worry and concern.

With pure tenderness.

“Boss?”

That tenderness was wiped away with that one word. In its place was a hard blankness.

But she understood it this time. They were in danger. Surrounded by his men and possibly the enemy.

Alejandro couldn’t afford a sign of weakness.

He stood as a man she didn’t know approached. He looked scary as hell. Big and wide.

“Tobias. Did you get them all?” Alejandro asked.

“Got a couple of guys running down a few that took off. Three dead. One injured.”

“Good. Take the injured one to question him. Call in Gavin’s guys for clean-up. Any idea who they are?”

Tobias nodded stoically. “Yeah, they’re Sammy’s guys. Among the dead is Clive, one of his top guys.”

Alejandro nodded. She saw the way the skin around his mouth tightened. He hadn’t expected this.

“Joder. Should have known Clive would regroup and strike.”

Tobias ran his gaze over her, but his expression never changed. Then he left. For a big guy, he sure did move fast.

Cairn kneeled next to her. “Let me look.” He took the sweater from her, pulling it back to check the wound.

“How bad?” Alejandro asked.

“Not too bad. But he’s lost some blood.”

Not too bad?

He’d been shot! What the heck had to happen for his injury to be considered bad?

“Call Aaron,” Alejandro ordered. “Tell him to prep for a gunshot wound. Get one of the other cars and someone to help lift The Scot in.” Alejandro reached down and drew her up. He ran his gaze over her. “Is any of that blood yours?”
