“You heard him. Let’s go get my sister-in-law and nephew asshole style. It’s a family homecoming, bro.
“I say we make all the noise we can bringing them into our city. Tell my family where the fuck they can’t go? Must have lost their fucking minds,” he says as if talking to himself with the last part as he walks to climb into the car Eddy, one of Skittles’s guys, climbs out of.
I look down at the keys in my hand. When I lift my head, Louis, another of Skittles’s guys, steps from another car and leaves the door open as he waves me over.
“Happy early birthday from me and Skittles. She was waiting, but when I texted the crew, she changed her mind,” Pit says in answer to my questioning look. “Let’s go.”
He gets into his car and cranks up the radio as Trick Daddy’s “Let’s Go” rattles the car. I look through the windshields of the other three cars as their engines rev. I find Deacon, Luke, and Tak.
Much to my surprise, they’re not alone. Noni, Syd, and Jazzy are all passengers. Another car pulls into the lot. Looking inside, a smile comes to my face. It’s Kid driving Kelex, Leo seated in the back seat. The three seem to be fussing with each other.
I have to admit. I’m still pissed at Kid, but this means a lot. She’s always there for Lex and AJ. On that fact alone, I’m starting to forgive her.
I swallow hard as my heart swells. Kelex shows up for no one unless you’re important to him, which usually is limited to Skittles and sometimes the crew. He catches my eyes and winks.
I nod and head to my truck for my son’s car seat then climb into the car and rev the engine. The tailpipe pops and fills me with determination.
It’s time to go get my family. I pull out and race for the mountains to get my wife and son.
Chapter 43
Coming Home
Alexis
“What’s up with you?” I say to Ven as she comes back downstairs smiling after being gone for much longer than a bathroom break.
“Nothing,” she sings.
“O…kay. Shouldn’t you and Shawna hit the road? It’s getting late, it’s already dark out.”
She gives me a mischievous smile and gingerly takes a seat. I know right away she’s up to something. I narrow my eyes as I watch her.
“No, we’re not in any rush,” she says, looking down at her nails. “You know we should go for a mani-pedi. You’re going to love my girl.”
“Is she in Vander?”
“Of course.”
“Well, I’ll be finding someone up here for now.”
“Nope, you’re about to learn all it takes is a text or one call and my assholes come through.”
“Huh?”
As I sit in confusion, AJ jumps up and starts dancing to the music blasting outside the house. Shawna has a small smile on her lips and Skittles has her head tilted as she looks back at me with a huge smile on her face.
“Follow me.”
She stands and waves for me to follow. I grab AJ’s hand so he can’t take off. My brows knit as I see the suitcases I came in with by the door. When I get outside the door, six cars are out front, their headlights blinding me.
The engines are revving and the tailpipes pop and gargle. One of the cars is blasting “Let’s Go” by Trick Daddy. I stand in confusion.
Skittles walks into the middle of the cars and turns to face me. Noni, Syd, and Jazzy all step from the cars and stand out in front of them like Skittles. That’s when the engines cut off and the guys all step out.
They walk up behind the ladies and wrap their arms around them. Pit wraps his arms around Skittles’s neck and kisses the top of her head. She turns her head up and he pecks her lips.
Kelex steps out of one of the passenger seats and stands before the car with his arms folded across his chest as he looks beyond me. I turn to find Shawna biting her lip as she stands in the doorway.
I turn back in time to see Kid come from the driver’s side of the car Kelex came from. She stands, bouncing on her toes as she keeps glancing toward the last car. I look to where she’s looking and that’s when Ant unfolds his big body from the last car.
“Daddy,” AJ squeals and rips from my hold to take off for his father.
Ant squats and picks him up, kissing his cheek and tickling his belly. I’m still confused as I watch all this.
“Time to go home, baby girl,” Pit says.
“But—”
“No buts. Vander and every motherfucker there will hear us coming and I dare a motherfucker to touch a hair on your head once we’re there,” Ant says.
“Fuck, no touch mother fuck,” AJ says.
