Derek looks at the coffee, then at me, and back at the coffee. “It’s black,” he says.

“That’s because I drink it black and for this morning, you will too.”

He huffs and takes the cup from me. I sit down beside him. I should just offer to take him home, forget I ever met him, and go on with my life. But I don’t. Not just yet.

“You’re bossy.”

“I am.” That likely won’t change anytime soon. “You need to be more careful. Don’t drink so much. Do it with a friend. Whatever you need to do, but take better care of yourself.”

“Ugh! I was fine! It’s not that big a deal. Relax.” Derek takes a drink of his coffee.

“You were not fine. I don’t know you from Adam, but anyone could see you were not fine last night.” I stand and walk toward my room. “I’m going to take a shower. I can take you home afterward if you want.” Before Derek has the chance to reply, I close my bedroom door, leaving him with his coffee and thoughts.

Derek

Someone has their panties in a bunch.

But Daddy’s right. I wasn’t okay last night. I shouldn’t have had that much to drink, and I should’ve stayed at Travis and Gary’s condo. They’d practically dragged me back to their place after we hung out at Flirt. They said I was too drunk to be on the hunt for dick, and they ordered me to sleep on their couch instead. When I heard them messing around in the bedroom, I knew that was the chance to make my escape.

Travis and Gary couldn’t understand. I needed to get laid…and Cockfight was having a leather-themed night—the perfect opportunity to grab a hot daddy. But after a few more cocktails, a guy on Grindr caught my interest, and I was ready to take the massive cock he’d messaged me a pic of. Things didn’t really go according to plan when I wound up in what I thought was my Uber. Should’ve looked at the pic of the driver, but I was too drunk to notice anything other than the vehicle.

I’m just glad Jackson’s gone right now. I need to mentally regroup and sort through the horrible mess that was last night.

I check my phone and see Gary’s sent me over twenty messages.

My phone buzzes. It’s him, so I answer right away.

“Where the hell did you go last night?” Gary asks, his tone severe. I’m not used to him being upset with me. Annoyed, yes. Pissed, no.

“Oh come on, Gare-bear, I was tipsier than I thought, and—”

“I was worried about you. Travis was worried about you. We called Hayden and Cody to see if they’d seen you while they were out, and then they asked their friends if they’d seen you. We were all concerned.”

Usually, I can come up with a clever quip or something to ease the tension after I’ve fucked up, but I feel terrible about making everyone worry about me. Between that, the hangover, and waking up at a stranger’s place—a super-hot stranger—I’m totally thrown.

“Where are you now?” he asks.

“Um…I’m not really sure.”

“Derek, I need you to tell me something…anything…that’s not going to totally freak me out right now.”

“He’s a really nice guy.”

“How is that supposed to make me feel better? You’re at some random guy’s place? What’s the rule?”

“Text you the address I’m going to so if he kills me, they’ll be able to find the body. I just…I had a lot more to drink than I thought.”

“Is that Derek?” I hear Travis’s voice in the background. “Let me talk to him.”

Gary sighs. “Just give us a second. Derek, give me your address, and I’ll see you this afternoon when we go for our run with Hayden, okay?”

We’re prepping for a 10K in a couple of months to raise money for an Alzheimer’s charity, so we’ve been meeting at the park for practice runs. Working on our times.

I hop off the stool and walk around the room, searching for a business card or a letter. I spot a stack of mail on a side table beside the door. I approach it and see the addy on the bill at the top of the stack.

“I’m in Spire Tower down the street.”

That’s a relief. Gary fusses a little more, but I can tell by his tone he’s disappointed in me.

As I scan the place, not remembering how I got back here, I have to admit what I did last night was even more irresponsible than usual. Yeah, sometimes I’m horny and go to a guy’s place who I don’t know that well, but I’m sober and responsible. I don’t mind acting like a fuck up, being the butt of everyone’s jokes because they think I’m some flighty, irresponsible kid, but that’s not the real me. I take care of myself…because at the end of the day, I’m the only one who’ll always be there for me.
