Duke arrives and the five of us bundle into the backseat of his new truck. It was a gift from Nash though Duke and I both know why he bought it. This truck has one of the best safety ratings of any vehicle on the road. If he could, I think my husband would have purchased a tank and had his daughter riding around in that.
When we get home, the smell of pot roast in the slow cooker greets us. Nash is still showing me how to cook. He’s a patient teacher, and he’s quick to praise me for every attempt. Even if I burn food or mess up a dish, he eats every bite without a word of complaint.
I settle Ellie into her bassinet. Sometimes, I look down at her and my heart is filled with so much love that I feel like I might burst. She’s too perfect, and I still can’t believe I get to be her mom.
“How are you, mama?” Nash puts an arm around my shoulders when he comes into the room. He’s already settled the doggies with some food and put a pie in the oven for dessert.
“I’m happy,” I tell him and my voice wobbles. “I feel like I’m living a fairytale.”
After so long alone and sad, now I wake up to so many precious gifts. My caring husband, my beautiful daughter, our adorable Frenchies, and this warm, homey cabin.
He nuzzles my hair. “This is the happily ever after you kept waiting for.”
His words make me smile. I can’t remember if that girl with the red hood ever got her happily ever after. But if it involved a mountain man like mine, I’m certain that she did.
