“He bought you a new mattress.” Julia laughs out loud.
“I’ll call you back,” I say, hanging up the phone.
“I’m sorry, a mattress?” I repeat. “Like to sleep on.”
“Yes.” The man nods his head. “Is the other mattress ready?”
“Can you hold just a second?” I say and take my phone and call Michael, not even caring that he’s probably with his parents.
“Hey,” he says, and I can hear that he’s walking and then hear a car door slam. “I was just calling you.”
“Did you buy me a new mattress?” I ask, turning to look at the men. One raises his eyebrows, avoiding looking at me while the other guy grimaces.
“Yeah,” he says as if he just sent me a pizza. “You said your back hurt. So I called my guy.”
I walk into the bedroom. “Who the hell has a mattress guy on speed dial?” I hiss out in a whisper.
He totally ignores my question. “Make sure they take your old mattress and don’t touch anything. You shouldn’t lift anything.”
I look around my room. “I like my bed,” I say even though it’s old, and I got it when I was in college, and it should have been replaced. “How much is this mattress?”
“I’m on my way to you,” he says, and I just look at the phone. “See you soon.” He hangs up the phone.
I shake my head and walk back out where the two guys are just standing there. “I have to take the covers off the bed,” I say, and they nod. I move as fast as I can and dump the bedding on the couch. “There you are.”
The men come in and take out the mattress and then come back and take out the headboard. “Um, I thought you said that…”
“This frame is too small for the king one, so we have a new one also.” I nod my head.
“Of course you do,” I say, folding my arms over my chest. The men come back with the new headboard that’s almost the same as the one they just took out but a beautiful cream color. I walk over to the couch and start folding my sheets.
It takes them ten minutes to put it all together and then another ten minutes to bring in the mattress. “This is the best mattress on the market,” one of the men says. “You’ll sleep like a queen.”
“I’m sure I will,” I mumble. When they walk back out of the bedroom, they look at me, and it seems they are scared to tell me the next part.
“We have two boxes of bedding,” one of the guys says when they walk out. I get up and walk over to my bedroom and see the massive bed. I shake my head, walking over to the bed and sitting on it. It’s hard at first, and then I sink in. My hand rubs the mattress as the guys come back in with two massive boxes. “We will leave these right here,” the guys says, dumping the boxes. No doubt wanting to get the hell out of here before Michael gets here.
They walk out, and I get up, walking over, but another knock is at the door. I shake my head and pull the door open. Michael stands there, wearing the same thing he was wearing before, one of his hands squeezing his neck. “You are out of your mind,” I huff out, ignoring the way his eyes are clouded. “A king-size bed?”
He walks in, going straight to the bedroom. “It fits perfect,” he says, looking at me. “And I also have like special pillows coming in.”
“What special pillows?” I ask, closing the door and walking back into the house to stand in front of him.
“I don’t know. I read about them. It’s like this whole long pillow that twists and turns to wrap around your body.” He tries to describe it. I just stand here with my mouth hanging open because I can’t come up with any words. “Anyway,” he says, turning to look at me. “Are you ready?”
“Ready?” I tilt my head to the side. “For?”
“To meet my parents,” he says, and my eyebrows rise. “They kind of want to meet you.”
My palms get sweaty, and my mouth gets dry. “What do you mean they kind of…?”
“Well, I told them about the baby,” he says and scratches his head. “At first, my mother started crying,” he shares, and I have to walk over to the stool and sit down. “By the end, she basically said if I don’t come back with you, not to come back.”
“But…” I say. “But I haven’t showered.”
“You look amazing,” he says, and I shake my head. “You going to grab your purse?”
“One,” I say, getting up, and my heart starts to speed up. “I’m not meeting them in loungewear,” I say. “And two, we are not finished talking about the bed.”
