CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Sam

We ate dinner together on the screened-in porch. Afterward, I went out with him to take care of the animals. I basically just followed him around like a damned fool, but he let me and didn’t complain.

His property was gorgeous. He had a hot tub and an outside shower, both of which I wanted to make use of.

When I told him we should watch a movie, Emerson didn’t argue. He wasn’t sure how he felt about it—he made that much clear—and it wasn’t as if we sat there cuddling or anything like that, but he hadn’t watched one with me the previous weekends. When he woke me up around two in the morning to suck my cock, I realized he slept for shit. Nearly every night I’d spent at this house he’d woken me up for some kind of sex. I didn’t figure he set an alarm, so that meant he just didn’t sleep very well, and maybe, being with me, touching me or being pleasured by me gave him some reprieve from whatever plagued him.

Like always, he didn’t stay, and I didn’t ask. He swallowed my load, jerked off on my stomach, then told me good night and was on his way. I hoped it helped him get some rest.

But I did set an alarm, getting up when I knew Emerson did, to tend to the animals. I was pushing it, I knew that, but damned if I cared. I wanted to spend time with him, wanted him to know he had a friend because I thought maybe he needed that.

I thought maybe I did too.

“Ah, hell. What are you doing up?” he asked when I met him out in the barn.

“Fake answer: hmm, buildin’ a rocket ship because I wanna fly you to the moon. Real answer: stalking you.”

His cheeks sucked in slightly, Emerson trying to bite back a smile. It had only been three weeks, but he was already grinning more around me than he had in the beginning. “You realize you’re annoying, right?”

“You realize you’re paying me to be annoying, right? Seems to me, you’re the one with the issue.”

I wondered what kind of comeback he’d have but was surprised when he just said, “If you’re going to be out here bothering me, the least you can do is help.”

So that’s what I did. We milked his cows, collected eggs, fed animals, and mucked out stalls. When he started picking weeds from his garden, I helped with that too. There was an area of fencing by the goat pens that needed to be fixed, and we got that taken care of in no time flat.

It got hot and muggy early, but that didn’t stop us. We were both sweaty and dirty, and damned if watching him work didn’t get my dick hard. I liked the way his muscles moved, the way he wiped sweat from his brow and the back of his neck. The scent of salt and hard work on his skin when we were close. He bit his bottom lip sometimes when he concentrated, and I wanted to do that for him, pictured him out here alone, keeping himself busy so he didn’t think on the stuff that made him sad.

We worked until lunch, when I walked over and lay under a tree, shirt off, enjoying the shade. The sky was a perfect blue, mixed in with the leaves of the tree when I looked up. I sent Molly a text to check in, then called my mama.

She answered on the third ring. “Hey, baby.”

“Hey, you.”

“What are you up to?”

“Just at Molly’s, doing some yardwork.” As the words left my mouth, I noticed movement and saw that Emerson had walked over.

“You’ve been there even more lately. What’s this, the third weekend in a row you’ve stayed with her?”

“Yep.” I hated lying to her, hated that so much of my life was a lie, but I wasn’t ready to change that either. Things were easy with me and Molly. Plus, this situation helped her out too.

“You want to move in with her…you should move in with her. I’ll be okay. I don’t want you to live your life around me.”

The thing was, I knew she didn’t, but that didn’t change the fact that she needed me. “I don’t wanna do this right now. How many times do we gotta talk about it?” I watched Emerson while I talked to her. He crossed his arms and leaned against the tree, studying me right back.

“Until you listen?”

“Are you tryin’ to get rid of me? Because it sounds like you’re tryin’ to kick me out.”

“I would if I thought it would work. Not because I don’t want you around, but…”

Shit. Her voice was soft with sadness and self-anger. I’d do anything to be able to take that away from her. “Mama…I’m happy where I am. I don’t wanna move in with Molly. Hell, she don’t want me to either. Things work the way they are.”
