Fuck your good boy, Zeus. Fuck me harder. Don’t stop. “I’m close.”

“Yes,” he whispers, need making us both shake. “I need to feel it, feel you come for me. Then I’ll wait. I’ll be patient until I get you back in this bed with my cock buried inside you.”

He finds my prostate and rubs against it. “You feel that? Right there, JD. That’s where I’m spending the night. All night. As much as you can take.”

“Oh God. Carter.” My body arches against his. Pulsing light and waves of heat shatter me until I’m broken on the bed. I barely hear his shout of release as he joins me, but I feel it on my skin. Marking me the way I’m marking him.

“Holy fuck.”

He collapses on the bed next to me, his shoulders shaking with his breathless laugh. “My thoughts exactly.”

That was fast. But intense. Insane. Every time we’re together is better than the last. If things keep going in this direction I could actually die of pleasure by the end of the week. “I think I forgot what planet we’re on.”

His hand snags mine and he drags it up to his mouth, brushing his lips across my knuckles. “We’re back on the shitty planet where you’re getting dressed to leave this room.”

He doesn’t sound like he likes the plan. Neither do I, but it’s one I made to give him a break from me. And to give me some much needed perspective.

I hate perspective.

“I could text her and tell her to forget it,” I offer tentatively. Because screw breathing room. “We don’t have to leave this bed at all. Skip the break and go right to where you’re spending the night. All night. As much as I can take.”

He groans and rolls to his side, pulling me closer and sifting his hands through my hair. “Why do I get the feeling we had a communication glitch? I didn’t want you going anywhere, JD. If I had my way… What I mean is, I’ve been trying not to push you. Trying to restrain myself, because every time you touch me or kiss me, I’m tempted to take too much. You gave me the day, and I wanted it to be about more than sex. I wanted us to spend time together so you’d know how I—”

The faint ringing of my cell phone drifts down the hall, interrupting him. Almost immediately his phone joins in. Both go to voicemail, and then the ringing starts back up again.

“Son of a bitch.” He buries his face in my neck and kisses me before heaving himself off of the bed to go find our phones. “Hold that thought.”

I have a feeling I might be holding it for a while, and I know it’s going to drive me nuts. What was he about to say? And why had he waited until now to say it?

I may never know. Because that ringing sound is real life acting a lot like my editor.

Cock blocker.

“JD?”

“Fiona? What are you doing here?” I look up in surprise, opening my arms just in time to accept her embrace. “Hey, what’s wrong? Are you okay?”

She leans back to frown at me in consternation. “Am I okay? You’re the one I followed to the police station, JD. Are you okay? Where’s Carter?”

“He’s still talking to one of the arresting officers. And I’m sorry if my text was confusing. You didn’t need to come here. To be honest, I’m not sure we did either.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean I’m icing on the cake, but I don’t think I’m the reason our criminal masterminds aren’t being granted bail. Toni is.”

Fiona, who was glancing down the hall behind her, whipped her head back in my direction. “Your neighbor? Oh hell, what did he do to her?”

“Nothing. No, he didn’t—she’s fine,” I say reassuringly, running my hands through my hair. “She didn’t go with him, Fiona. She sent him to prison instead.”

“You look pale, JD. Do you need to sit down? Tell me what you’re talking about.”

Maybe I should sit. I’m still reeling. Carter and I raced to the station after we got the call that Brent and Eddie had been brought in. A few minutes after we’d arrived I discovered Toni was there, specifically waiting to talk to me, I wasn’t sure how to respond.

After everything she said, I’m still not.

I follow Fiona to a row of black, plastic chairs attached to the wall and sit down next to her. “She’d arranged to speak to me before we got here. They put us in a private room and she just started talking.”

“What did she say?”

“That she saw Eddie’s car parked down the street a few hours before my date and she’d panicked, thinking he’d finally come after her. ”

“Where did she go that night?” Fiona asked scowling. “And why didn’t she warn you about that asshole?”
