I frown. “Because of Eliot?”
“Because of me. I had to tip the scales.” He swigs from his water bottle, then recaps it. “I’ve done some shitty things, and I needed to do something good.”
If it makes him feel better being here, then I’m happy to experience the pits of a Jeffra Roachy hell with him.
I see the Bermuda Triangle slyly using their phones while the Roach’s back is turned. They’re likely alerting their troops that the Ben Pirrip Cobalt is in their class.
It’s like catching a lightning bug in a bottle.
My focus zones somewhere else, away from the whiteboard. Away from the class. Little lightning bugs—no, tiny lights dot my vision. Prick my memory. Blood rushes out of my head. Woozy, I lean back.
Dr. Frisk told me to take deep breaths when I felt myself zoning out. Deep breaths. Don’t panic, she said. Just relax into the memory.
So I do, and I remember an umbrella with tentacles. My umbrella. I remember it’s mine. I remember the jittery feelings of being near Donnelly but not with Donnelly. I remember the tiny fairy lights sparkling around his grin.
I remember the winter wonderland decorations in the gymnasium.
I remember being swept into his radiance. I remember falling in love with him.
A happy memory.
This is the first big happy memory I’ve felt in its entirety so far.
Homecoming.
I remember all of it.
“Luna,” Ben’s voice draws me out of my head.
I blink my eyes open, not realizing I shut them. Lights are out, and a clip from We Are Calloway projects on the whiteboard.
In the dark, Ben’s concern is an overflowing volcano. “You don’t look well. You’re clammy.” He’s speaking to Frog. “She might need electrolytes. I have some in my bag.” He’s digging in his gym bag, risking the Roach’s wrath.
Frog puts a water bottle in my hand. “Drink this.”
“I’m okay,” I whisper to them, but I’m overwhelmed and near tears. They don’t realize they’re happy tears. The memory is so vivid. I can hear The Cure playing. I can feel Donnelly’s soft touch grazing my elbow, then my lower back. Electric.
His touch has always tingled every inch of my body.
It’s difficult to walk away from the memory when I want to drown inside it, but I take a few breaths and search the room, thinking I’ve become the center of unwanted attention. Most concentrate on the video clip.
Except Jeffra. She arches a brow at me like she’s about to claim I had an orgasm in the dark. After watching The OA video, I wouldn’t put it past her to do it. But strangely, her mouth stays shut.
I’m not sure if it’s Ben’s presence or the Roach’s self-proclaimed bad mood today. She probably just doesn’t want to rock the boat, and I don’t want to waste any more of my brain space on her.
No, I need to keep my brain as empty as possible.
I smile. I’m ready for my memories to fill it.
