He sobered. “Ah, they called you.”

In this she had some good news for him. “Oh, I heard the crash. It’s just things are so quiet here that any noise can wake you up. You’ll find that out. It’s eerily quiet. But seriously, what you did was brave and heroic. The fact that you managed to not tear up that car is icing on the cake.”

His eyes lit with amusement. “Wait. There’s cake? No one told me there would be cake. I would have gotten here way sooner if I’d known there was cake.”

He was way easier to ignore when he wasn’t being charming. And she’d found him pretty hard to ignore then. “There is absolutely no cake. But I do have the ingredients to make one. What can I say? I have a sweet tooth.”

“And I am excellent at doing dishes,” he replied with a wry smile.

“Really?”

He shrugged. “I’ve seen them done before. I think I can manage.” He was quiet for a moment. “It’s good to see you again, Sailor Moon. I’m sorry I was an asshole. That afternoon meant a lot to me, and I’m not good at being myself. I would like very much to be myself around you.”

“Do you know who yourself is? I sometimes wonder.” This was why they’d fit together so beautifully that day. They understood each other’s lives. “Sometimes I think I’ve spent so much time hiding who I am that I don’t know me.”

“Well, that got serious fast. I was just asking for some cake, but if you want to do a deep dive, I’m ready.” He was staring at her with the sexiest smirk on his face that made her think that deep dive he was talking about wouldn’t be into her psyche.

She sighed and rolled her eyes to cover for the fact that she found him ridiculously adorable.

She wasn’t going there. No way. No how. He would be gone in a couple of days and then she could go on with her life. “You’re going to be obnoxious, aren’t you?”

“That’s what I’m saying, Taylor. I’m going to be the best roommate ever. I’m putting away my worries and I’m going to relax for once. And all that work you talked about me doing… Yeah, I’m injured and taking some time to recover,” he vowed. “Did I thank you for stitching me together again?”

“No, actually you pretty much cursed me until I knocked you out.”

“Thank you.” He got back to his lunch. “And this is delicious. You saved me and fed me and didn’t even make fun of me for thinking I wrecked the car. I’m going to have to find a way to pay you back.”

She could think of a few ways.

But she wasn’t going to. Horny Taylor was going to get shoved down deep. Horny Taylor wasn’t going to boink the Agency’s golden boy and get herself in trouble.

She had a job to do and didn’t need distractions.

But a distraction could be fun. And it’s not like you’re going to see him again. He works in an entirely different world than you. Besides, you’re getting out soon. A couple of nights with a spy would be a good way to go out, sister.

Nope. She was going to college after this job was done. Her father promised her some normalcy when he finished this one last job.

She got the feeling sex with Drake Radcliffe wouldn’t be normal.

“I think doing the dishes will suffice. And I get to pick the movies.” She was having her romcom night.

It would remind her that spies didn’t do happily ever afters.

“Done,” he promised.

Just a couple more days and she would be free.

Chapter Three

Four days later and the snow was still coming down. “How is this happening? It’s April.”

Drake looked up from the book he was reading. “In the Carpathian Mountains. I would bet it’s not sticking down in the valley. Give it another day or two and it’ll all melt. Are you getting cabin fever? You want to take a hike?”

She was getting fever, but not the cabin kind. Four days in and she should find him obnoxious. She should be bored with him.

He was kind of awesome.

“No.” She sank down on the couch across from him. “I just thought…”

A brow rose over his eyes. “You just thought? What? I would be gone by now?”

Yes. And to say it would be rude. “I thought I would be able to go into town by now.”

“Liar,” he said quietly, but there was a hint of a smile on his face. He set the book down and leaned her way. “Taylor, what’s wrong?”

What was wrong was that he was nearly perfect. After the rough start, he’d proven to be a pleasant companion. He let her work when she needed to work and relaxed with her when she wanted to relax. He complimented her cooking and did the dishes. If he got up first, there was a pot of coffee waiting for her even though he didn’t drink coffee.
