That thought has guilt twisting my stomach.

“She came crawling back with her tail between her legs.”

Fury’s voice comes from behind me, and I turn to see him standing with another biker, one I haven’t met before. I try to force a smile on my face, but it wobbles a little, which only makes me feel so much worse.

“Hey,” Fury says, curling his fingers around my shoulder, “don’t you go lettin’ him get in there. You’re too smart for that.”

I swallow the lump in my throat and nod.

“This is Mex, short for Mexico, because he’s always fuckin’ doin’ a runner there to get out of trouble.”

I can’t help but smile now.

Mex extends a hand, a sly grin on his face. He’s quite the sight, as are most of the men getting around this club. He has messy black hair, the kind of messy that almost looks as though it’s styled to appear that way. He has dark stubble on his face, maybe a few days’ growth, and his eyes are a silvery gray. His skin is olive and he’s a big guy, stockier even than Western. He’s definitely got the dark and mysterious look going for him.

“Nice to meet you, lady,” he murmurs, his voice low and husky.

Yikes. What’s with these bikers? They’re all turning me into a flustered mess.

“You, too,” I say, nervously taking his hand.

“You smoke, Bonnie?” Fury asks, eyes raking over me in that devilish manner that he does so well.

“Cigarettes? No, I can’t say I do.”

“Marijuana.”

Oh.

That.

I mean, I’ve tried it of course. I can’t say I dislike it. I quite enjoy it when I get the chance. It’s not often I do get the chance, mostly because people in my friend group don’t smoke so it’s not often passed around.

“I don’t mind it,” I answer, truthfully.

“Fan-fuckin’-tastic.”

He takes my hand and pulls me into the yard where everyone has gathered around the fire. They’re all drinking, smoking, and relaxing. We find a spare seat and sit, then I watch as Fury pulls some things out of his pocket and begins assembling a joint. Moments later, he’s lighting it. Glancing over my shoulder as the strong odor wafts past my nose, I see that Western has noticed I’m here and is watching us from his seat inside, his eyes narrowed, his wife still next to him.

I’m hurt.

I could deny it, but I’d be lying.

He kissed me, and if we hadn’t been interrupted, I don’t actually know where it would have led. Now, he’s sitting by his wife as if nothing happened. He hasn’t acknowledged it, not even once, and that is probably what’s making it worse. Admit it was a mistake, apologize, I don’t care – at least it would help me to understand. Standing, Western begins moving toward us, Hazel following behind.

I turn back to Fury, reaching for the joint when he hands it to me.

I place it between my lips and inhale, just a little. The last thing I need is to end up in a coughing fit in front of everyone. Holding the air in my lungs, my eyes move to Fury’s, and he grins as I slowly release it. “Atta girl,” he murmurs, taking the joint back.

Immediately, a sense of calm washes over me. Relaxing back, the tension seems to slip away just a little. I’m one of those lucky people that doesn’t really get a high from marijuana, but instead I have the best sleep of my life and all the weight of the world washes away for a time. I like how it makes me feel, even if it is only temporary.

“Would you look at this,” Hazel’s voice comes from behind us, but I don’t turn. “She wasn’t joking when she said you were into her. I’m shocked, Fury, I never thought I’d see the day you’d settle down and with ...”

Her voice trails off and my heart hammers against my chest, not wanting to turn and meet her cocky expression. She is having a great time with this, and if I didn’t already know it before, it’s solidified now – I don’t like her. Not even a little bit. It’s not because of Western, either; it’s because she radiates bitchiness like it’s blood running through her veins.

I wasn’t raised to behave like that.

Beside me, Fury turns and gives Hazel a look so intense, it has her eyes widening with shock. “Dare finish that sentence, Hazel, and see how it ends for you.”

Oh, boy.

“I didn’t—” Hazel begins, but Fury cuts her off.

“Bonnie is a fuckin’ one in a million kind of woman, and while that is a concept I’m certain you’ll never understand, doesn’t mean I’ll sit back and let you speak about her like she’s not sittin’ right fuckin’ here. Now fuck off.”

I look to Fury, because his words are kind, and it really means so much to me that he’s standing up for me. It makes me feel like I matter. Smiling at him, I hold his eyes.
