“I know.”
I was lost. What wasn’t Ansin telling me?
“You’ll understand when we get there,” he added.
I had no choice but to trust him. “Will she be coming along?”
“Of course. I cannot fuck Obliza from thousands of miles away.”
He was bringing her along to impregnate her?
This was beyond tasteless. My baby had been kidnapped, and he was worrying about screwing some strange woman and starting his own family.
“If you do not want her to come with us, simply say so, Jeni.”
“You’d do that for me?”
He nodded.
“I’d rather her not come.”
“As you like.” He stood from the bed. “You should get packing.” He turned to leave.
“Where are you going?”
“I am going to take her to the guest room and fuck her.”
“Now? Here?”
He chuckled. “If I did not know any better, I’d say you were jealous.”
Like hell. Though, admittedly I felt something: An outrage that my life was literally in the worst possible crisis a mother could endure, and he was worrying about knocking up some woman he’d brought to my home. But jealous? No. “You go at it. Have a great time.”
“We leave in one hour.”
CHAPTER SIX
Dad and I said a teary goodbye before he left for Tallahassee, each of us trying to stay positive for the other. Deep down he felt like this was all his fault, and I felt like it was mine. Neither was true.
I hugged him tightly and assured him we’d get Draco back. But would we? As the minutes ticked by, the “what-ifs” were seeping into my head, including what if Ansin bailed on me to pursue his own plans.
For now, Obliza was gone, having left shortly after sex with Ansin. I had to wonder what he’d offered her up front, besides living in a mansion near the ocean. Was it money? A new car? Or had he given her a glimpse of his powers? Maybe she wanted something money couldn’t buy. I knew from experience that Ansin was the sort of man who could deliver. Just as long as it wasn’t love. Had she already figured that out? Did she care?
None of your business, girl. Butt out. Oddly, that was the exact opposite of what I wanted to do.
I glanced over at Ansin, who was driving us to the airport in the tank.
“So how did she like the house?” I asked, trying not to sound too interested.
“She felt it was adequate.”
Adequate? Compared to the run-down house I grew up in, that place was something from a fairy tale. “And when will she move in?”
“As soon as you move out, so you tell me.”
“I can’t even think about that right now.” And why would he ask me to? I might not be showing it, but I was a mess inside. The dam of emotions was being held back by a razor-thin layer of hope.
“I understand.”
“Do you? Because it feels like the only thing that matters is you screwing Obliza and getting her to pop out a baby.”
He kept his eyes glued to the road and didn’t reply.
“So I’m not wrong,” I concluded.
“I have waited thousands of years to keep a promise to my people and my mother. I can wait no longer.”
“And just why did you wait so long? Why the sudden burning desire to start a family when you had centuries to do it?”
“I have my reasons.”
“Thus my question,” I said, feeling annoyed. “What’s your reason?”
“You truly wish to know?”
“Absolutely. Why in the middle of my worst fucking nightmare are you obsessed with starting a family?”
“My obsession existed long before your unfortunate crisis, but to answer your question, I did not pursue my goals until now because I could not find a woman worthy of my devotion.”
I held back a hostile laugh. “Your devotion? Is that what you’re calling your cock these days?”
“Marriage is a very sacred act among my people. It is forever.”
“Most marriages are. Then things happen and—”
“No,” he interrupted. “It is forever. Beyond this life and into the next. There is no separation. Not ever.”
“Oh.” So he wasn’t speaking metaphorically.
“So, you see, I have been very meticulous in my search.”
“And now, after all these years, you’re going to knock up a stranger.” Made no sense.
“If I cannot have a woman who is worthy, then at least I can choose a woman who can provide worthy children.”
“So practical.” I laughed mockingly. “And will you marry her?”
“Perhaps. Though, I would not marry her in the way of my people. It would be a legal arrangement.”
“Ah. So you’re marrying her on paper, but you’ll keep doing whatever you like while she raises your children.”
“She will assist in caring for them; however, I plan to be a very integral part of my children’s upbringings. Otherwise, why have them? They must be taught everything I know.”
“So she’ll be the nanny, and you’ll be their mindfuck trainer. Nice. And to think what I could’ve had with you, Ansin. A loveless marriage, popping out kids who’ll be taught to steal instead of work for what they want.”
