“You do?” he asked, frowning.
“Yeah, I know it’s a little strange, but I don’t know, I like it. I get to see what’s on sale, and what looks nice, and it helps to organize what we’re going to cook.”
“Who do you live with?” he asked, expecting her to say she lived someplace with other young people.
“My mom, my sister when she’s not having sex with random wolves, and me,” Eloise said. “You?”
“My pack.”
“Is it a big pack?”
“Some days it feels like it’s too big.”
She began to chuckle.
“Where’s your dad?” he asked.
“Died after I was born. It was an accident on a building site. It’s why we ended up moving to No Wolves Road. Mom lived here when she was a kid, left to be with Dad, and then we moved back here.”
“You like it here?” he asked.
“I do, for the most part,” she said.
“What don’t you like?”
Her cheeks went bright red.
“I’m going to say the wolves,” he said.
She opened and closed her mouth. “It’s not the wolves, well, not the fact they’re wolves…”
“What is it then?” he asked.
“They don’t … consider us worthy.”
This made him frown.
“I’ve lived here a long time, nearly twenty years now, and in all that time, I’ve never once seen any of the wolves mate or marry a human. What I’ve seen is the wolves come to town, enjoy the human men and women, and then leave them high and dry for a fellow wolf. Being used and disrespected is what I don’t like.”
Chapter Two
“Everything is done,” Wendy said. “We’ve just got to wait for a select few to come and collect their clothing, and you can deliver the rest.”
Eloise took the clipboard her mother passed her. Her mother was a dry cleaner and seamstress, and repair lady, which she liked to add on, because she always got asked that question if she did repairs. She owned the only shop, as well as the side business of a haberdashery and fabric store. Eloise loved working with her mother. The work between them was always busy, which is why it was such a pain in the ass when Dorothy didn’t pull her weight. It was hard to believe at times that Dorothy was the oldest, even though she never acted like it. She was constantly picking up her sister’s slack, and trying to find her. Most of the time she was in a motel or some random wolf’s house, enjoying him.
“I’ll get it done this afternoon,” Eloise said.
“I’m going to close the store early today. I’m tired, and with it being the full moon in a couple of days’ time, I know we’re going to be busy.”
“Crap, when is the full moon?” She rushed over to the calendar and saw it was only a few days away. Wrinkling her nose, she stared down at the clipboard. “I didn’t realize it had come around that fast.”
Every month, the days after the full moon were always the busiest. The wolves didn’t like to squander anything, so clothing came to be cleaned and repaired. Her mother, many moons ago, had told her to never be curious about the stains found in the clothing. Eloise never questioned her mother, she just did as she was instructed. Cleaning, repairing, and doing the job to the best of her ability. It helped that she enjoyed the job.
Dorothy, on the other hand, hated it and preferred to either deal with the haberdashery side, or to deliver. Today, her sister hadn’t even shown for work. This was fast becoming a regular occurrence, much to her own annoyance.
Without another word to her mother, she grabbed the van keys and headed out. She didn’t like doing deliveries like this.
For the next couple of hours, Eloise drove from pack to pack. This was part of the agreement with the packs. As a human resident of No Wolves Road, she could venture from land to land without risk of anything happening to her.
A couple of the wolves attempted to flirt, and she shot them down.
When it came to the final delivery, which happened to be the Alpha ranch, she frowned. Was that Beau’s place? She didn’t know that her mother had done any of the work for Beau. Pulling up just outside of the large ranch, she saw the sign, and then drove down the long drive with several bumps in the road. Before she had even parked the van, she spotted a couple of men and a woman outside in the front.
This was the first time she had delivered to this ranch.
“What the fuck do you want?” one of the guys said.
“I’ve got a delivery here for a Steven Dee,” she said, noticing the gaze turn to the guy who lay on the front lawn.
“Seriously?” the girl asked.
“What?” Eloise imagined the one called Steven asked.
“We all do our laundry the right way and you get it sent out.”
