“I … don’t know.”
“You know, I accepted him sneaking out of the house on Halloween. It was your first time together and you came down without any kind of morning sickness, and you looked happy. I was even willing for it to happen the next week. He snuck out at Thanksgiving without me feeding him, and we’re getting closer to Christmas. Tell me, Eloise, are you using this man?”
“I’m not using him,” Eloise said.
“But you have him sneaking around.”
“It’s complicated.”
“Why don’t you uncomplicate it for me?” Wendy said, putting a pancake onto the stack she had started, and turning toward her.
“You know what he did,” Eloise said.
“Yes, I’m aware of what he has done, but I don’t agree with what you’re doing. You’re toying with that man’s emotions.”
“I’m not.”
“Then why is the father of your child always sneaking around? I would understand if you two weren’t fucking, Eloise, but you are. What you’re doing is cruel.”
“How is it cruel? I’m pregnant with his child, but I’m not sure about our future.”
“Bullshit. I didn’t raise you to be a cruel bitch, and I get you want that man to learn his lesson. Trust me, I think he has learned his lesson, and he’s not going to fuck up again. That man loves you. He loves you so much he is willing to climb into our house to get to you. To sneak out, so there doesn’t have to be an awkward conversation. Now, if you’re using him because he is good in the sack, fine, make him aware of that. But if there’s something else going on, then you cannot spend the rest of your lives sneaking around.”
“I love him,” Eloise said. She felt tears fill her eyes. “I’ve loved him for a long time, and he broke my heart.”
“I know what he did, Eloise. I was there to pick up the pieces.”
She swiped at her tears. “I don’t want you or Dorothy to think I’m weak taking him back.”
Wendy frowned at her. “Why would I think you’re weak?”
“After what he said, and … how I was afterward.”
Her mother sighed. “You know, a lot of people say a lot of bad shit in the heat of the moment. I know some people think we only say what we mean, but I don’t believe that. I believe when we’re in the heat of the moment, we panic. We don’t know what to do or what to say, and emotions take over. Passion takes over, until what we’ve said cannot be unsaid. Now, I’m going to ask you this one final time. Are you playing with that man, or do you actually have feelings for him?”
“I love him.”
“Do you want to be with him?” Wendy asked.
She nodded.
“Then eat your pancakes and cut the crap. Also, you can invite as many of his pack over as you want for Christmas. It would be nice to have a full house.”
“You’re not mad?”
“No, I’m not mad. Why would I be mad?”
“Because I’m going to forgive him.”
Her mother walked over to her and cupped her face, tilting her head back. “This is your life and you’ve got to live it the way you want. You’re my daughter and if you want me to hate him, I’ll hate him, and glare at him every chance I see him. But if you love him, and he’s going to be part of our lives and a member of our family, then I’m not going to be a bitch to him. It’s time for us to get to know each other. I am going to be his son or daughter’s grandmother.”
Eloise smiled. “You mean that?”
“Honey, I’m not going anywhere. You better tell him he has my blessing, but if he thinks for a second that I’m going to let him hurt you again, I’ll cut his balls off and feed them to him, or maybe his pack.” Wendy shrugged. “You shouldn’t be worried about loving a man, especially when we know he loves you too, more than anything.”
Eloise finished her plate of pancakes in record time. “Can I…”
“What’s all the gossip about?” Dorothy asked, stepping into the kitchen. She was still in a pair of pajamas, yawning as she walked in.
“Eloise is going to tell Beau how much she loves him,” Wendy said.
“It’s about time.” Dorothy dropped into a chair, and seconds later Wendy placed some pancakes in front of her.
“You knew?” Eloise asked.
“Yeah, the walls on this place are thin. We knew he was home, and we also knew he was giving you a good time. It’s nice to know you two are working it out.”
“I don’t even know if he wants to be with me,” Eloise said.
Dorothy lifted her gaze up. “Are you serious right now?”
“Yes, I am being serious.”
“Okay, just so we’re clear, we’re talking about the same guy, Beau Alpha, aka Nasty Alpha?”
