Instead, I took my anger out on Henley because she was the easiest target.

I am a fucking coward.

And the situation grew worse when we returned from the movies. Henley appeared set to rip me a new asshole the instant we were alone before we left that morning, but she’s had a handful of opportunities over the past three days that she let slip by with the quickest farewell.

It has me panicked she didn’t enjoy herself as much as I did. Perhaps she didn’t want to be fucked like a whore and forced to orgasm an incalculable number of times.

She couldn’t have been faking. Her shakes, those moans, the wetness, that couldn’t have been made up. She was as into it as I was.

Wasn’t she?

It’s probably the dad bod that turned her off. I’m putting steps into place to fix it. I haven’t worked out this much since my early twenties, which is facetious considering I’m adamant we can’t do that again.

At least not on your wife’s damn bed.

I shut down my frustration when Lucy plops her backside onto the warped wooden step. I’ve been watching their self-defense class for the past thirty minutes. I missed the first half because Chelsea decided to hang around after Lucy’s dance lesson and have lunch with the girls.

If you haven’t worked this out yet, I am a stubborn man. I’ve forgiven Chelsea for stuff that happened in the months following Caroline’s death, but I won’t ever forget.

I grin when Lucy chugs half the bottle of water I hand her before resting her sweat-dotted head on my shoulder. She’s been a part of the action as much as Henley has, and it has me kicking myself that I didn’t think about teaching her some moves earlier. It is never too early to know how to protect yourself.

“You better be quick, Daddy, or you might lose, and we know how much you hate losing.”

“I don’t hate losing.”

Even sitting, Lucy cocks out her hip and fans her tiny hand across it. “You do so. You told the man at the fair that his duck game was fra-due-lant.” She struggles with her last word.

“It was rigged!” I defend, giving her an easy word to use next time. “I hit every damn duck, but only three went down.” She giggles when I won’t let it go. “I had every right to inspect his gear. Ricocheting pellets are extremely dangerous.” When she rolls her eyes, I band my arm around her shoulders and pull her to my chest. “And what have I got to lose? My most valuable possession is at my side, where she belongs.”

I stop noogying her head when she murmurs, “Henley.” When I free her, she gives me a miffed look while fixing her hair into place. Once all the static I created has settled, she locks her eyes with mine before proving she is far wiser than her almost six years. “Uncle Thane likes her a lot.” She shouts her last two words. “So if you don’t stop lying, Henley might start looking at him like she looks at you when you think she’s not looking.” Confusion mars her face until she runs her sentence through her head a hundred times to ensure it is right. She returns her focus to me once she is confident her tongue twister makes sense. “You look at her too. You just keep your tongue in your mouth…” Her head flings back to the main area of the finished basement. “Unlike Uncle Thane.”

The annoyance in her voice jumps onto my face when I follow the direction of her gaze. Not an ounce of air is between Thane and Henley’s bodies. They’re joined at the hip, and with Henley needing leverage as she endeavors to throw him over her shoulder, her ass is grinding against his crotch.

Thane looks one grind away from climax.

“You need to distribute your weight more evenly.” Lucy’s face gleams with excitement when I enter the basement instead of hiding my watch on the stairs. “Especially when your attacker weighs more than you.” I peel Thane off Henley’s back before showing her the correct stance. “Widen your feet to the width of your shoulders, then use the strength in your legs to lift him from the ground. Your ass should bring him up and over you, not give him an erection.”

Thane holds his hands in the air non-defensively when I shoot him a riled look.

Lucy asks, “What’s an erection?”

I pretend not to hear her while instructing Henley on the correct procedure for fending off an attacker. She implements my instructions but won’t look at me while I give them.

Her lack of eye contact pisses me off more than Thane’s murmur after Henley tosses him to the ground like a ragdoll. “After all this action, I need a cold shower and a stiff drink.” He locks his eyes on me. “You cool to wrap up this session while I take care of business?”
