“Ohh, Babs is mad at you,” my sister says.
“Yeah, she is.” I thrust a frustrated hand through my hair.
“You should go on vacation. Maybe if you go to Macau or Monte Carlo, you’ll find her. She could be a grifter, moving from one casino to the next.”
“Maybe you should take your fancy shoes and go home before I do something all of us will regret.”
The door opens, and we both turn. My jaw drops when I see the woman standing at the door. Her mouth forms a perfect circle. It takes me a half second to register that the woman I’ve been searching for just walked in my office. Another half second passes before I realize that the woman is pregnant. Her hand flies to her small bump, and she backs up, turning to flee.
“Call security,” I yell to my sister. “Do not let this woman leave the hotel.”
I race after the girl, who is through the lobby and into the hall, banging on the elevator button. The stupid doors part, and she darts in. By the time I reach her, the doors are closing. “You’re not getting away from me,” I yell.
Not this time. Not ever again.
CHAPTER 2
MILA
“What the hell was that?” I whisper to myself. My heart is racing. Archer’s words echo through the elevator as it starts to descend.
“That’s your lucky day is what that was,” the pretty woman in the elevator says. She’s holding a box in her hand, clearly making her own exit out of here. I’m guessing she’s the woman I was supposed to be replacing. That’s not likely happening now.
I hadn’t noticed her when I bolted inside. I was too busy making my getaway. I’m not even sure why I’m running. But when Archer’s eyes locked on mine and then dropped to my stomach, I panicked.
Which is really stupid because I’ve been trying to find the man for the last month. Since I found out I was pregnant. Who gets pregnant the first time they have sex? I suppose it was like the first five times they have sex or was it six? I don’t know. All the orgasms and pleasure started to blend together after a while.
I’ve actually been debating hiring someone to find him for me. What else was I supposed to do? I had to try. I had no clue where to even start. Considering I wasn’t even sure if he lived in Vegas.
My guess was no since we’d gone up to a hotel room the night we were together. Now he was right in front of me, and I ran like my ass was on fire. What are the freaking odds?
Then again, this is the same hotel and casino I was in when I met him. Never in a million years would I have guessed he owned it. He never let on. I hadn’t asked much, though. Neither had he.
I knew what the score was. It was supposed to be a one-night stand, but it ended with me getting knocked up.
Now he’s my new boss?
I groan, closing my eyes, not sure what the hell I’m going to do next. I have to talk to him at some point. It’s the right thing to do. Gosh, he looked livid when he recognized me. He was not happy.
“Trust me. You don’t want that job.” I open my eyes to stare at the woman in the elevator with me. “He’s an asshole. I think he hates women or something. He’s so rude.”
“Really?” This is getting better by the second.
I was really banking on this job. Even when the HR department tried to give me a bit of a warning about my new boss, I assured them that I would be able to handle him. I think they saw my small baby bump and felt they should be honest with me about what I was getting myself into.
I thought anything would be better than serving at the steak house. I’ve been working there since I moved to Vegas.
I know with each month that passes that I won’t be able to keep up the pace. Since the majority of the pay is made up of tips, I knew I needed to find something steadier. I’m only four months into my pregnancy, and my feet are swelling like crazy. It’s really been the only side effect of pregnancy I’ve had. So far, I’ve lucked out in the whole morning sickness area. I think I might have preferred that. Then maybe I wouldn't be in search of a job that wouldn’t have me on my feet so much. Though the benefits this place is offering are amazing. I need this job.
“Yeah, he’s gone through a bunch recently.” She gives me a sympathetic look when she notices my stomach. I’m grateful when the elevator dings, drawing her attention to the doors that are sliding open.
