I shifted again, the throb growing. The back of my neck was heating up.

Me: I’d like that. All of it. I’d sink down to my knees for you, and I’d suck you inside my mouth. I want your taste, right now.

Brett: Christ. I want you right now.

Me: Me too.

“What are you doing?” Lo’s voice came out of nowhere.

“Agh!” I screamed, my hands and phone flying in the air. Then I screamed for a whole other reason, because my phone! It was in the air, and I was watching it go down, where it was going to fall to the floor and it was going to break apart, and yes, I was watching it in slow motion, until a hand appeared and plucked it out of the air.

“This yours?” Travis arrived, his checked bag in hand.

I gaped, my lungs concaving.

He frowned at me, his eyes glancing to my phone’s screen.

“NO!” I rushed over to him, grabbing it away. God. Had he seen anything?

I quickly looked. Something happened and the texts were gone. All my apps were pulled up, but my shoulders relaxed. Thank goodness. I quickly pulled up my texts.

Me: I almost dropped my phone. We’re in the airport, about to head to the hotel. Pause this for now?

Brett: I was wondering if something happened. And yes. Me and my dick miss you.

Me: I miss you too. How are you feeling about the game tomorrow?

Brett: Guys are hyped. Everyone is saying Orcas will win—it’s their revenge game from last year’s Super Bowl, but that shit’s not going to happen. We’re heading in for meetings, then are doing dinner tonight and going to bed. I’ll call you when I get to my room. Pick up where we left off? My dick’s already excited.

Me: Okay…

Brett: ….? What’s the …? Don’t leave me and my dick hanging. Him, not so much. He’s at a full salute.

Me: Nothing. It’s nothing. I was just wondering if I could sneak into your room tonight or you into mine, but we shouldn’t. You could get fined.

Brett: Don’t think that I haven’t thought of that, but they gave me a roommate tonight. I’m going to kick him out while we finish our sexting from earlier so don’t worry. We’ll both end the night satisfied.

I chuckled, feeling a little better. He’d been quiet all week, but this Brett seemed like normal Brett. Some piece inside me clicked back into place, the one that had been worried about him.

“Stop sexting your man,” Lo hollered, waiting for me beside our Uber. “Let’s go, woman. We got a hotel to explore and a bar to hit. This mama and her man are on holiday, and we’re going to introduce San Diego to Wine Roger. They’ll never know what hit ’em.”

Me: I gotta go. Lo is on the fun bus and I cannot miss this. I love when she and Roger both get on the fun bus at the same time. Love you. Kick ass.

I thumbed it off, not thinking.

It wasn’t until later, much later, when I realized what I’d sent.

He never responded.

We were in the stands the next day, slightly buzzed, and I was fully stressed from this game.

Or, we were very buzzed.

Okay. Extremely buzzed.

Drunk. I was drunk.

So were Lo and Roger.

They got drunk first.

Brett and I weren’t able to finish our sexting conversation last night. He did reply later, but he didn’t comment on the ‘l’ message I’d accidentally and completely hadn’t meant to send, saying his roommate refused to leave. The timing wasn’t ideal, but Brett wasn’t a liar so I believed him, and some of the nerves there smoothed away.

Some of them. Not all.

I’d told him the ‘l’ word and his response was no response. No matter how I sliced that, it wasn’t good.

But we were here and the game was tied, and I was back to stressing. I couldn’t handle this. The back and forth. They were up. We were. They kicked a field goal. We did too. Hence, I was drinking. Travis was our sober bodyguard. Lo deemed him that title since the rest of us were already six beers in, and these beers were big. Roger went off on a whole tangent relating the depth and girth of the Orcas’ beers to certain body parts. Lo couldn’t stand, she was laughing so hard. The people in front of us heard Roger’s tangent, which turned into a lecture (somehow), and that transitioned into a pep-talk, and by the end, it was a motivational speech. Almost every person around us listened to him, and as he stood up on his seat, his beer raised, twenty-three other people joined him in a salute to the mighty Super Bowl defenders.

We were Kings.

As the group chanted together, I got goosebumps.

Wine Roger was now Beer Roger. I forgot how beer affected him.

Someone from the Orcas administration found out I was here and offered a private box. I didn’t think this was normal for the opposing team’s fans, but then again, I didn’t know. It was my first NFL game, much less the first one where I personally knew one of the players.
