“Shut your mouth,” Presley blurts, her mouth open.

“You did not,” Shelby says, her eyes looking at me like they will come out of her sockets.

“How good was it?” Clarabella asks as she pulls the chair from in front of my desk to the side, sitting.

“It was fine,” I downplay it, not wanting to do this but knowing I’ve let the cat out of the bag.

“It was fine?” Clarabella says, shocked. “Then you aren’t doing it right. Jesus, I remember the second time I hooked up with Luke, it was even better than the first, and that was explosive.”

“Ugh,” I say, throwing up my hands. “Fine, it was amazing. It was so much better than it was the last time. I don’t know what it was, but it was like I was looking for him since leaving him.” I look at them. “Does that even make sense?”

“You had sex with people after him?” Presley asks, and I scoff.

“Well, obviously, I had to get him out of my system.” My legs start to go up and down. “But I think it was after the second guy that I was like, maybe I need to connect with someone before banging them.”

“How did that work out for you?” Presley asks, and I glare at her.

“I just banged a guy who I said I would never talk to again, and I think I saw fireworks.” I lean back in the chair. “It was a fifteen out of ten.”

“So now what?” Shelby asks the same question I was asking myself the whole time since I woke up.

“Now, nothing. Now, hopefully, this is out of our system and we move on,” I declare and the three of them laugh.

“I’m putting down bets that he shows up again,” Clarabella announces, getting up, “and the sex is even better than it was last night and this morning.”

“How did you know they had sex this morning?” Presley asks as she gets up.

“Who doesn’t get up and have morning sex?” Clarabella scoffs at them, and now it’s my turn to roll my lips when they just avoid looking at her.

“You girls need to take care of your men more.” She shakes her head. “My man skips to work every single day.”

“Every day?” Shelby says, folding her arms over her chest.

“If it’s not sex, at least a blow job,” Clarabella declares.

“Luke is not allowed to talk to Bennett, ever,” Presley says as the two of them walk out of the office, arguing about what is a good number of times to have sex in a week.

I don’t even listen to them. Instead, I glance over at the window, looking out at the sun in the sky, when my phone beeps from my purse. I get up and walk over to take it out.

Matthew: I’ll see you tonight.

I put the phone down, not bothering to answer him. “No, you won’t,” I say out loud at the same time that my head calls me a liar.

I walk out of practice with my phone in one hand and my protein shake in the other, shaking it up and down. I pull open my text messages. The last text I sent Sofia is still unanswered but says delivered. I smile, knowing this was what she was going to do. I don’t even know why I’m so surprised right now.

I knew this morning when she didn’t come downstairs to get her coffee that she was putting space between us. I knew when I kissed her goodbye that she would not answer me. Last night was one of the greatest nights of my life. Fuck, being with her again. It was as if my soul was closed off for the last two years and I was finally alive. Which is crazy, but I now see I was just going through the motions of what I thought my life should be instead of actually living my life.

Instead of texting her again, I opt to call her. The phone rings four times before it heads to voice mail.

“You’ve reached Sofia Barnes. Please leave me a message, and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.”

“Hey, baby,” I say softly, knowing it’s going to piss her off. “It’s me, call me back. Miss you.” I hang up and head home.

As soon as I get home, I make my way out to the back of the house, going straight for the gym. I spend a couple of hours in there doing my workout, and the phone doesn’t ring the whole time. I mean, it rings but it’s not who I want it to be. Christopher calls me, my mother even calls me, but nothing from Sofia.

Walking into the house, I go straight to the kitchen and grab one of the prepared meals I have in the fridge. I put it in the microwave for a couple of minutes before standing and eating it straight out of the container. I quickly shower, and when I get out, I wear jeans and a white polo shirt before jogging out to my car. I dial Sofia again, but it goes straight to voice mail this time. She’s ignored me all day, and I don’t bother leaving her a message this time.
