It’s Stefano’s turn to laugh. “Okay, well, we know that marriage is not real.”

“Well, her ring is on my finger.” I look down at my hand, smiling. “And mine is probably around her neck.”

“Like a noose,” Stefano jokes, and even I laugh at that.

“So is that what you called me for, to shit on me? Because I didn’t see you at this party, staying home like a senior. At least I showed up,” I remind him.

“I figured that I would send you and no one would miss me,” Stefano explains and I roll my eyes. “Clearly, I was wrong.”

“Clearly. Do you have nothing better to do on a Monday morning than call and bother me?”

“I have a shitload of things to do,” he replies, “but I was also calling to tell you about the sprinkle we are having for Addison.”

“A sprinkle?” I question. “Like a pool party but with a sprinkler? Is that what they do in the South?” I chuckle. “Either way, I’m not coming. I don’t do pool parties.”

“I live in the city.” He laughs at me. “No, a baby sprinkle.”

“You are going to put the baby in the sprinkler?” I shout. “Is this what people do?”

“You are such an idiot. I’m going to call Eva.”

“Call the wife, then,” I agree, “she’ll tell me where to go and what to do.”

“Like a good husband.” We both laugh. “Okay, I’ll keep you posted.”

“Sounds like a plan.” I hang up on him and immediately call Eva, who answers after one ring.

“Did you just drop her off?” she shrieks. “You left home like forty-five minutes ago.”

“What? No, I dropped her off ten minutes after. She is fine. She was smiling, so I think she was good.”

“Why didn’t you text me?” she asks and I can hear her walking around.

“You said you were going back to bed,” I remind her. “Which reminds me, should I not take Mondays off also?”

She laughs at me. “Why would you do that?”

“So we can have time together,” I whisper, “uninterrupted.”

“I think we have enough time uninterrupted.” I hear the coffee machine going off. I pull up my schedule in front of me and see that I’m leaving on Wednesday until Friday. I make the decision right away.

“Gotta go,” I say, getting up. “See you later.”

“What did you call me for?” she asks.

“I’ll tell you about it later.” I grab the cup of coffee and walk out of my office.

“You’re annoying,” she huffs and hangs up on me, making me laugh.

“I’m working from home,” I tell the receptionist. “I have to prepare for my meeting on Wednesday.”

She looks up, and I swear she’s looking at me like I have two heads coming out of my neck. I’ve never, ever had to give anyone a reason for anything. For anything and now even saying why I’m leaving is weird. “Sounds good.” She doesn’t even care, and giving her an excuse threw her off and myself also. It’s almost as if I’m robbing a bank and then waiting for the cops outside of the bank with the gun.

I walk over to the elevator, hoping it opens right away and not that I’ll turn around and tell her I’m going home to have sex with Eva, because at this point, who the fuck knows what is going to come out of my mouth. I look down as I press the elevator button, feeling like my shirt is getting tighter and tighter around my neck, even though I have three buttons open. When the doors open, I practically run inside, pressing the lobby button before poking the closed-door button a million times.

Only once I’m in the car do I relax, but just a little, my phone feels like a ticking time bomb. Like Stefano will call and know that I’m up to no good. I pull over at a flower shop on my way home, grabbing a bouquet of orchids in a vase. I hope like fuck it doesn’t spill all over the car.

I park my car next to hers before grabbing the vase. I walk up the steps, nervous as fuck, which makes me laugh since I’ve never been nervous in my whole life. I’ve also never liked anyone as much as Eva. I’ve never had the sex I’ve had with her. It blows my mind and makes me want to kick my ass that we haven’t done it before. I mean, I know why, but I don’t think either of us is ready for what I have to say.

Punching in the code for the door, I walk in to find her coming out of the kitchen. She’s wearing exactly what she was wearing when I left to drive Cici. A white shirt that hangs off her shoulder, showing me she’s not wearing a bra. I can tell because I can see her nipples. And her famous shorts, but these are not as tight. “What are you doing here?” she asks, surprised, her eyes lighting up as her smile grows.
