“So what?”
“So what? So what? Is my hair okay?”
“Perfect, as always.”
“So, it’s all fucked up,” she says, trying to smooth it down. It’s a bit messy, but she looks well-loved, so it’s pretty perfect to me.
This is just the private ceremony; the public ceremony will be held later this afternoon, but even though it's private, there are probably two hundred people in this room.
The children sit with a team of nannies, but they wave at us as we walk past them. We move to the front of the church and stand with Courtnee, Nunzio, Ashlee, and George. I bow to Ash and George, though they insist I don’t have to, we are in public, and it befits their station. Stacee executes a perfect curtsey.
“You’re late,” Cortnee says, eyeing Stacee’s big hair.
“Sorry.”
“You were having sex, weren’t you? Ashlee whispers.
“Of course not. This is a church. We got lost.”
“You had sex in the church,” Courtnee mockingly asks.
“No!”
“We did,” Ashlee blurts.
“So did we,” Courtnee says.
“We’re going to hell,” Stacee whispers, grabbing her sister’s hands.
“At least we’ll be together.”
I know it’s been hard on them being so far apart, but we visit both New York and Uskia as often as possible. I’ll travel anywhere to ensure Stacee’s happiness.
Spending the rest of my life with this woman won’t be enough. I know that, but I’ll just have to hope the afterlife exists and keeps us together. I won’t accept anything less.
