“Where is the baby going to live?” Penelope asks, and I see Abigail wring her hands. I bet she’s wishing now that she hadn’t asked that question.

“I was thinking that maybe Abigail could move in with us,” I finally chime in, “but it’s Abigail’s decision. But whether she lives with us or not, the baby will be here as much as he can.” Just thinking of not being there every step of the way with another child has me blinking away tears.

“Your dad and I still have a couple of things to talk through,” Abigail explains, reaching for my hand, “and some logistics to work through.”

“Are we going to have a room here for when the baby comes over?” Penelope asks.

“Yes,” I say without thinking twice. Regardless of where the baby lives at the beginning, he’s going to know he’s always got a place here.

“Can I help decorate?” she asks Abigail.

“Of course,” Abigail says right away, “we can choose whatever you want.”

“When do we find out if it’s a boy or girl?” Penelope asks, and I’m about to answer when Abigail shrieks.

“Oh my God.” She brings my hand to her stomach. “I think I just felt a kick.”

Penelope flies out of her chair and comes to us. Abigail grabs her hand and puts it next to mine, and I swear I feel the softest movement ever. “That’s it,” Abigail says. “Did you feel it?”

“Yes,” I say, blinking away the tears and looking at Penelope, who laughs when she feels it again.

“Hi.” She moves down to talk to Abigail’s stomach. “I’m your big sister.” I don’t know if it’s her voice, but we both feel the baby kick again.

“He loves his big sister,” Abigail whispers with tears in her eyes as she wraps an arm around her. “You are going to be the best big sister ever.”

“It’s a boy?” Penelope questions. “Can I have a sister after?”

“How about we take this one baby at a time?” Abigail suggests, and I just look at her.

“We can always try for a girl next.” I wink at her and lean in and kiss her, and when I do, our son kicks. I’m not sure if he’s for this plan or not.

CHAPTER THIRTY

ABIGAIL

“We can always try for a girl next.” He winks at me, and I swear my face gets flushed, or at least that is what it feels like. He leans in and kisses me, and when he does, our son kicks again, this time harder than ever.

“Oh, I felt it again,” Penelope says, getting even more excited. “It’s me,” she declares proudly, “he likes me the best.”

I can’t help the tears that spring to my eyes. “Of course he does, beautiful girl.” I was so scared she would hate me for having a baby. I was so scared she would feel like she had to fight for her father’s attention. I was so scared for so many things that if I’d just said what I should have it could have been so different from the start. It’s at that moment my stomach decides to let out the biggest groan I’ve ever heard.

“Someone needs food,” Tristan observes. “You two want burgers?” I just nod my head. He walks over to the kitchen where he grabs his iPad and pulls up, I don’t even know what. He stands there in the middle of his kitchen, looking down at the iPad in one hand while he reaches up with his other hand to scratch his neck. His shirt lifts a bit and the flushing feelings start again. I just stare at how hot he is before he puts the iPad back on the counter and looks over at us. “Food is going to be here in thirty minutes.” He looks at Penelope. “How are we doing with homework?”

“I have some reading to do.” She gets up, leaving me by myself as I watch them with their afternoon routine. I get up and walk to the island, pulling out a stool next to Penelope, not to intrude on their time but to be with them. I watch as Penelope pulls her things out of the school bag. She starts getting her things ready when Tristan walks over to my side of the stool.

“I like having you here,” he states softly, and I can’t help but smile because I like being here also. I take that back. It’s not that I like being here. I like being with them. “I also would like to know if it’s okay to kiss you.”

“I would like that very much,” I reply shyly as he rubs his nose on mine. My hand comes up and holds his cheek while he kisses my lips softly. My stomach flutters every single time he kisses me. When dinner comes, he brings the brown bags into the kitchen, making plates for Penelope and myself, but nothing for him.
